... Read moreHey fellow bookworms! I totally get the frustration of a miscommunication trope gone wrong – it’s like authors forget their characters have mouths and brains! After my own recent experience with a book that literally put me in a 2-month reading slump because of this very issue, I wanted to dive deeper into why this trope can be so divisive. At its core, the miscommunication trope is when conflict or tension arises because characters fail to communicate clearly, leading to misunderstandings, assumptions, or secrets kept. Authors often use it to build drama in romance or create 'enemies to lovers' situations, hoping to delay the inevitable happy ending. When done right, it can be brilliant! Think of situations where characters have genuine reasons for not sharing information, like protecting someone, cultural barriers, or deep-seated trauma that makes vulnerability impossible. These are the moments where the misunderstanding makes sense and the eventual revelation feels earned and impactful. However, far too often, it falls flat – or worse, it creates a 'fatphobic plotline' like the one I encountered. It's when characters, who are supposedly intelligent adults, simply refuse to talk to each other about something easily resolvable. They jump to conclusions, give each other the 'stink eye' based on rumors, or let pride get in the way of a simple conversation. My recent read felt particularly 'stupid' because the main conflict stemmed from a misunderstanding about 'cheese curds' and unfounded 'rumours' spread by a third party, and the female lead's 'chubbier side' became an unnecessary and harmful element in the perceived slight. The worst part? They cleared up this central 'misunderstanding trope' halfway through the book, yet the 'enemies' dynamic persisted, making the entire setup feel pointless and drawn out. It physically hurt me to finish! So, how can you spot a potentially frustrating miscommunication trope before it ruins your reading experience? Look for signs like characters making huge assumptions without asking clarifying questions, or situations where a simple "Hey, what did you mean by that?" could resolve everything. If the conflict feels flimsy or relies on characters acting out of character just to prolong the plot, it might be a poorly executed 'miscommunication trope.' While some tropes, like the 'only one bed trope,' can be a fun way to force romantic proximity and spark chemistry, the miscommunication trope needs careful handling. It shouldn't be a crutch for plot development. Instead of manufactured misunderstandings, I prefer conflict that arises from genuine character flaws, differing worldviews, or external obstacles that force characters to grow and communicate effectively. What are your thoughts on the miscommunication trope? Have you read any books where it was done exceptionally well, or perhaps exceptionally poorly? Share your experiences – let's discuss how authors can navigate this tricky plot device to give us the satisfying stories we crave!
