My Orphans
These Beauties 🫶
Raising orphaned piglets, especially breeds like Duroc and Berkshire, can be both challenging and rewarding. From my personal experience, bottle feeding is crucial in their early days since they miss out on their mother's nourishment and warmth. Using specially formulated piglet milk replacer ensures they receive the right nutrients to develop healthily. Consistency in feeding schedules, usually every 2 to 3 hours, helps mimic their natural nursing routine and promotes steady growth. Beyond feeding, maintaining a warm and clean environment is essential as piglets are vulnerable to cold and infections. I found a heat lamp or heating pad set to a safe temperature vital to keep them cozy. Additionally, gentle handling encourages bonding and socialization, which positively affects their temperament as they mature. Participating in communities focused on piglet rearing, especially those sharing experiences about Duroc and Berkshire breeds, has been invaluable. They provide insights on dealing with common issues like digestive troubles or weaning challenges. Through dedication and love, these bottle babies can grow into strong, healthy pigs, making the effort truly worthwhile.
