The Joy IS in the In-Between ❤️
I read an article today about delegating tasks by hiring staff so you have more time for the joys of parenting.
It made me stop and think.
For me, the joy of parenting has always been found in the in-between moments.
The 4 a.m. breastfeeding sessions.
Cleaning a scraped knee after a fall.
Watching my children eat a meal I made.
Teaching them how to cook instead of hiring someone else to do it.
Being there when they wrote their first sentence, read their first book, or rode a two-wheel bike for the first time.
I’ve never seen the everyday tasks as something standing in the way of parenting. To me, they are parenting.
Instead of removing my children from those moments, I try to include them. They help cook, clean, garden, and tackle the ordinary parts of life alongside me. We still make time for adventures, but I also want them to learn that life isn’t only about the exciting moments—it’s about showing up for the ordinary ones too.
Those everyday moments are where lifelong skills, confidence, and family memories are built.
That said, every family is different. If hiring help allows your family to thrive, that’s wonderful. There’s no one right way to parent—this is simply what has brought our family the most joy.
What has your experience been?

Parenting is often seen as a series of milestones or big events, but many of us find the deepest satisfaction in the small, everyday experiences that make up family life. Personally, I've realized that it's those in-between times—not just the highlights—that truly shape the bond between parent and child. For example, those quiet moments during early morning feedings or bandaging a scrapped knee are more than just tasks—they’re opportunities to nurture, comfort, and teach. By involving children in daily activities such as cooking or gardening, we not only impart practical life skills but also foster a sense of responsibility and belonging. In our busy world, it might seem tempting to outsource chores or delegate responsibilities to create more 'free time.' However, stepping back to engage in these ordinary moments can create lasting memories and greater emotional connection. It’s in folding laundry together, sharing a meal someone helped prepare, or encouraging a child’s first attempts at reading or riding a bike that trust and confidence flourish. Moreover, these experiences teach valuable lessons about patience, resilience, and teamwork—things that no hired help can replace. They reinforce the idea that parenting isn’t just about the big picture but also about showing up consistently for the everyday parts of life. Of course, every family’s situation is unique. Some find that hiring help supports their wellbeing and family dynamics, which is equally valid. What matters most is what brings joy and balance to your household. For me, embracing the 'in-between' has been transformative, reminding me that parenting is not about rushing past the mundane but celebrating each moment, however small, as part of a meaningful journey.
