It’s National Diabetes Month, and 18 months ago I was living with Type 2 diabetes. Today, 14 months post-op VSG (gastric sleeve), my labs show remission.
🩺🙏🏽 Remission ≠ “cured,” so I still track my A1C and habits like clockwork.
When your blood sugar is unpredictable, energy, focus, and mood are too. Dialing in metabolic health, insulin resistance, and daily habits changes everything—even on a tight schedule. 💼⏱️
What worked for me (and can work for you):
• 3-2-1 Plate Method 🍳🥗🥑 → 3 protein-forward meals, 2 cups of non-starchy veggies daily, 1 healthy fat each meal. Keywords: protein breakfast ideas, blood sugar control, metabolic health.
• Workouts. Consistency > perfection.
• Smart swaps ☕️ → Skip sugary coffee; choose protein + fiber first. Think Greek yogurt + berries, eggs + spinach, tuna + avocado.
• Hydration habit 💧 → 80–100 oz/day (start with one full bottle before coffee).
• Sleep + stress 🛌🧘🏽♀️ → 7 hours + 5 minutes of breathwork to keep cortisol from spiking blood sugar.
Let’s not forget VSG!
My path (your path may differ):
Metabolic/bariatric surgery (VSG) + habit stacking helped me reach Type 2 diabetes remission faster than lifestyle alone typically does. I’m still learning, still showing up, and I keep my follow-ups tight. Keywords: bariatric surgery, VSG, type 2 diabetes remission.
Quick start for this week (save this 🔖):
1. Build a protein-first breakfast you can make in 5 minutes.
2. Schedule three 10-minute walks on your calendar.
3. Swap one sugary drink for water + electrolytes.
4. Book labs to check your A1C.
5. Write your “why” on a sticky note and put it on your fridge.
Personal admission: I didn’t get here overnight. I had setbacks, plateaus, and plenty of “start again Monday” moments. But small, boring habits—done daily—beat all-or-nothing. 💙
I’m still refining my routine around work and mom life. If you’re juggling meetings, kids, and self-care, you’re my people. We get it done in the margins.

Living with Type 2 diabetes can feel overwhelming due to the unpredictable nature of blood sugar levels, which often impact energy, mood, and focus throughout the day. This unpredictability makes it crucial to build a tailored routine focused on metabolic health and insulin sensitivity. While bariatric surgery like Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) offers a powerful boost towards remission, the foundation lies in sustainable daily habits. One effective approach is the 3-2-1 Plate Method: three protein-forward meals daily paired with two cups of non-starchy vegetables and one healthy fat per meal. This combination helps stabilize blood sugar and supports metabolic health. Starting the day with a protein-first breakfast—such as Greek yogurt with berries or eggs with spinach—can reduce early morning blood sugar spikes. Physical activity doesn’t require hours at the gym; consistency matters more. Scheduling several 10-minute walks throughout the day can improve insulin sensitivity and overall energy levels. Coupled with hydration habits—aiming for 80–100 ounces of water per day, ideally started with a full bottle before any coffee—this helps optimize metabolism. Stress and sleep management play a pivotal role in controlling blood sugar. Cortisol, the stress hormone, can trigger glucose spikes, so incorporating at least five minutes of mindful breathing or breathwork and targeting seven hours of sleep can mitigate these effects. While VSG accelerates remission by reducing stomach size and impacting insulin function, it’s essential to continue monitoring lab work like A1C regularly and adjust habits accordingly. It’s a journey marked by setbacks and plateaus, but small, daily habits consistently practiced can lead to meaningful, lasting health improvements. For busy parents and professionals balancing demanding schedules, integrating these strategies in the margins of your day makes health achievable and sustainable. Celebrating small wins and staying motivated is key—remission doesn’t mean the battle is over, but a new chapter of empowered self-care and wellness.
