Some People Only Like You When You’re Not a Threat

2025/7/22 Edited to

... Read moreYou know, I've had my share of ups and downs, and through it all, I've learned a crucial lesson about friendship and support. It's easy to think everyone in your circle is genuinely rooting for you, especially when things are tough. They're there to lend an ear, offer comfort, and help you pick up the pieces. And that's wonderful! But what happens when you *truly start winning*? When you land that dream job, launch that passion project, or finally achieve a goal you've poured your heart into? That's when you really see who's in your corner. I used to believe that success would bring everyone closer, a shared joy. But I distinctly remember a time when I achieved a significant personal milestone. I was ecstatic, ready to share the news with my closest friends. What I got back wasn't the unbridled enthusiasm I expected. Some responses felt... muted. Others quickly shifted the conversation to their own struggles or subtly downplayed my achievement. It was a subtle sting, but it made me ask myself the hard question: 'Would they clap for me if I truly started winning?' It's a tough realization, but sometimes, people are more comfortable with your struggle than your shine. Your success can, unintentionally, make them feel insecure or threatened, casting a 'shadow' on their own situations. It's not always malicious, but it's a dynamic that can drain your energy. So, how do you pay attention to who truly supports you? It's all about observing their reactions when you are thriving. Look for genuine excitement. Do their eyes light up? Do they ask enthusiastic questions about your progress? Do they celebrate with you, not just for you? True supporters don't just offer sympathy; they offer genuine joy for your accomplishments. They're the ones who uplift you without making your success about them, who offer encouragement even when you're soaring, and who don't feel the need to compete. They understand that your win isn't their loss. On the flip side, be mindful of subtle cues. Do they offer backhanded compliments? ('That's great you got that promotion, but won't it mean longer hours?') Do they quickly change the subject or try to find flaws in your success? Do they seem distant or less engaged when you're sharing good news? These aren't always red flags for cutting ties, but they are signals to protect your energy and understand the nature of your relationships. It's about setting boundaries and knowing who you can truly share your biggest triumphs with. Recognizing these patterns isn't about becoming cynical; it's about building a supportive network that genuinely wants to see you succeed. My own 'Energy Check' has taught me that surrounding yourself with people who celebrate your wins as much as they support you through your challenges is vital for your growth and well-being. It allows you to share your joy fully, without reservation, and to receive the positive energy that propels you forward. So, take a moment to reflect: who truly claps when you start winning? Be honest with yourself.

The image features a bridge under a cloudy sky, with text stating "Neuroscience explains why affirmations don't work for some people, and it's not because you're doing them wrong." It introduces the topic of affirmations and their effectiveness.
Over a bridge background, text explains affirmations as neural training tools. It details how the brain's prediction-based nature flags affirmations contradicting self-concept as false, attributing resistance to the prefrontal cortex protecting coherence.
Against a bridge backdrop, the image explains that affirmations work through neuroplasticity, strengthening neural pathways via repetition and emotional safety. It notes that stress, trauma, or shame activate the amygdala, blocking integration.
why your affirmations may not be working for you~
Affirmations don’t “fail” because you’re doing them wrong. They fail when they ask your nervous system to leap somewhere it doesn’t feel safe yet. Your brain is prediction-based. It’s constantly checking new information against what it already believes to keep you safe and consistent. So whe

Not every fearful thought is intuition. Some are echoes.
You are not thinking “wrong.” Your nervous system is responding to what it learned. Fear can sound convincing. It can feel urgent. It can even feel like truth. But not every thought is a signal. Some are echoes. Healing isn’t about silencing fear or forcing yourself into positivity.
