How many hours do I study per day in PA SCHOOL?!

Studying in PA SCHOOL changes every single day!

Some days we have nine hours of classes and my brain can only handle a 30 minute review in the evening. Others I am slammed and I need to spend any free time I have looking over my notes!

On average, I would say I tend to spend two hours each day studying after class, with my weekend days consisting of 3-4 hours each day.

As mentioned before, this is broken up and highly variable day-to-day. Sometimes I’ll be lucky enough to have a weekend where I only need to spend one or two hours looking over things while others I am holed up in the corner of a local coffee shop studying from 7 AM to 7 PM.

All this goes to say that modules are highly variable, content is easier for some people than others depending on the body system, and your study habits will change and become more flexible as you go on through your graduate program.

My fellow grad students, how much time do you spend studying a day?

... Read moreIt's true, every day in PA school is a new adventure when it comes to studying. But beyond just how many hours I'm at my desk, I've learned that how I study and what I focus on makes all the difference. Many of you ask about the overall PA school schedule and preparing for exams like the PACKRAT or the End of Curriculum (EOC) exam. Let me share a bit more about what works for me and what I've learned about navigating this intense journey! First off, tackling those major exams like the PACKRAT and EOC requires a strategic approach right from the start. I've found that active recall and practice questions are my best friends. Instead of just re-reading notes, I use flashcards (digital ones are great!) and quiz myself constantly. For tougher modules, especially those like pulmonary, cardiology, and ortho/rheumatology – which often demand a lot of attention – I try to integrate different study methods. Sometimes it’s drawing out pathways, other times it’s explaining concepts aloud to a study partner. Preparing for PA exams isn't just about memorization; it's about understanding the 'why' behind everything. I also make sure to use official study guides and question banks recommended by my program; they're gold for physician assistant test prep! Then there's the big picture of PA school: understanding didactic versus clinical hours. The didactic phase, which is what I'm mostly talking about with my daily study hours, is all about saturating your brain with medical knowledge. This is where we dive deep into conditions like lupus and scleroderma, understanding their pathophysiology and treatment. It's intense, like a full-time job, often with classes from morning till late afternoon. But then comes the clinical phase, where you truly apply everything you've learned to patient care. This is where you get your hands-on clinical hours, rotating through different specialties. These rotations are crucial for developing your skills and are where all those patient care hours really add up. For anyone preparing for PA school, I cannot stress enough the importance of gaining solid patient care experience beforehand. It not only boosts your application but also gives you a head start in understanding the clinical environment. Even topics that might seem less glamorous, like nutrition and geriatrics (which I admit, I sometimes studied less intensively than cardiology!), are vital. Every module contributes to becoming a well-rounded PA. My advice for anyone considering or preparing for PA school is to develop flexible study habits early on, embrace the variability, and don't be afraid to ask for help. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and finding your rhythm amidst the demanding PA school schedule is key to making it through successfully. Remember, it's not just about the hours you put in, but the quality of that time.
