You’ve probably landed here because, like me, you’re constantly asking, “How do I actually focus on studying with ADHD?” The original article shared some fantastic foundational tips, and I want to dive even deeper into how we can truly master our focus for those challenging study sessions. One of the biggest hurdles for me, and I bet for many of you with ADHD, isn't just external distractions, but the internal ones. My brain can feel like a busy highway with thoughts racing in every direction, making it nearly impossible to settle down and concentrate on a textbook. To combat this, I’ve found that a “brain dump” before I even open my notes can be a lifesaver. Grab a piece of paper and just write down every single thought, worry, or to-do that pops into your head. It’s like clearing the cache of your mind, giving you a cleaner slate to start focusing. Then, I put my phone away – completely out of sight, sometimes even in another room – to minimize immediate external distractions. Building on the idea of Study Space Setup, I’ve realized that personalizing it for my unique focus needs is key. Beyond just earplugs or a fidget, I think about what actually helps me channel my excess energy. Sometimes it’s a specific textured desk mat, or having a cold snack and a water bottle within reach. The ONO Roller mentioned in one of my image captions is a perfect example of a discreet fidget that helps me focus without causing more distraction. And when it comes to Focus Tools, my noise canceling headphones aren't just for blocking sound; they create a mental barrier, signaling to my brain that it's time to switch into study mode. I experiment with different instrumental music genres – sometimes classical helps, other times a video game soundtrack is perfect for hyperfocus. Goal Setting is crucial, but for ADHD brains, it needs to be broken down into micro-goals. Instead of just “review Chapter 3,” I might set a goal like “read two pages and highlight key terms,” followed by “create three flash cards for these terms.” This way, I get frequent mini-wins, which are excellent for motivating my dopamine-seeking brain. And if I feel overwhelmed the night before the exam!, I use goblin.tools Magic ToDo to take what feels like a giant, impossible task and transform it into tiny, doable steps. It's truly amazing for breaking down overwhelming tasks into more manageable steps. And let’s talk about Body Doubling. This neurodivergent friendly productivity method is a game-changer for keeping you accountable and on task. I’ve found that even virtual body doubling through a ‘study with me’ video or stream works wonders. It's not about them actively helping me study, but the mere presence of another person (even virtually) helps anchor my attention and reduces the urge to wander off mentally. Finally, the most important ADHD Study Tip for sustained focus is self-compassion. There will be days when focus feels impossible. Instead of getting frustrated, I practice gentle re-direction. I allow myself a short, intentional break, maybe a quick walk or some stretches, and then attempt to re-engage using one of my preferred study techniques that worked for my brain. Remember, these are study tips for neurom (neurodivergent) brains, and what works one day might not work the next. The goal isn’t perfect focus, but consistent effort and finding what truly helps you thrive academically.
