Playing Volleyball at 4'8

I started playing volleyball as an adult — indoors first — I just wanted to play with my best friend.
Shortly after starting, I cut the tip of my finger off (yes, really), which slowed down my learning of fundamentals and forced me to adapt early. I played my first indoor league while still injured, not playing great, but trying to learn anyway.
At the same time, my knees were weak from an old injury I never rehabbed properly — so my movement wasn’t clean, and I picked up a lot of bad habits early on.
My progress felt slow and unguided.
I needed to fix my feet. Learn to get there and stop being afraid to speak.
Beach volleyball was just a training tool — you can’t slide in sand, so it forced me to fix my footwork. But the more I played, the more it clicked. I loved being part of *every* rally. Every touch mattered. Every decision mattered.
In December, I played my first beach doubles tournament — and that sealed it for me.
Now I’m documenting my journey:
• indoor → beach
• beginner → competitive
• short player learning a tall-person sport
Not because I have it all figured out — but because I don’t.

Don’t be discouraged by starting behind or physical limitations. Instead, treat volleyball as a journey of constant learning and refinement, celebrating progress no matter the pace. For players looking to follow a similar path, I recommend incorporating footwork drills, sand training, and active game play, always emphasizing quality movement and court awareness. This approach helps build a strong foundation whether you're playing indoor or beach volleyball. Your height doesn’t define your potential—dedication and smart training do.
