Trilogy Spotlight: The Scholomance Series

2025/4/27 Edited to

... Read moreOkay, fellow bookworms, I just had to talk about Naomi Novik's Scholomance Trilogy! If you've been seeing "A Deadly Education" pop up on your feeds, you absolutely need to know what you're getting into. This series is an absolute rollercoaster, and I’m here to give you my honest thoughts, especially since so many of you are asking about it! First off, let's dive into what the Scholomance actually is. Forget your typical magical academies; this is Scholomancy – a sentient, carnivorous school that literally tries to kill its students. It's a dark, dangerous place where magic (or 'malia') comes from killing magical beasts, and graduation is anything but guaranteed. El Higgins, our cynical, snarky protagonist, is trying to survive her way through it all without accidentally destroying the world with her own immense, destructive power. It’s definitely not a gentle introduction to magic, and the world-building is just phenomenal. The Scholomance myth is truly unique, twisting classic magical school tropes into something far more perilous. The series kicks off with A Deadly Education, introducing us to El and her struggle to control her dark affinities while navigating alliances and brutal creature attacks. Book 2, The Last Graduate, cranks up the tension even further as the students prepare for their terrifying graduation ceremony, facing even deadlier challenges. And Book 3, The Golden Enclaves (which completes the trilogy), brings everything to a head with incredibly high stakes and emotional payoffs. Each book builds on the last, deepening the world and making you root for El and her unlikely allies. Now, for the burning question I've seen everywhere: is the Scholomance series spicy? Honestly, if you're looking for steamy romance scenes, this isn't it. The focus is squarely on survival, found family, and El's internal journey. There's a slow-burn, incredibly compelling romantic subplot, but it's very much a background element and never explicit. It's more about emotional depth and connection tested under extreme pressure than physical intimacy. So, no, it's not "spicy" in the traditional sense, but it's incredibly intense and emotionally charged, which I personally loved. Many people compare this to Hogwarts: an incomplete and unreliable guide, but honestly, the Scholomance is Hogwarts' twisted, survival-of-the-fittest cousin. Where Hogwarts offers comfort and wonder, the Scholomance offers dread and grim determination. It's dark academia with a heavy emphasis on the "dark." If you enjoy series like Shadowhunters for their intricate magic systems and character dynamics, but want something with a much grittier, higher-stakes feel, then the Scholomance is definitely for you. It challenges the conventional idea of a magic school, offering a fresh, brutal perspective. I highly recommend the Scholomance Trilogy by Naomi Novik if you're craving a unique fantasy experience with a strong, morally grey protagonist, a perilous setting, and intricate magic. It's a series that will keep you on the edge of your seat, making you question everything and leaving you desperate for more, even after the final page. Seriously, add "A Deadly Education" to your TBR pile – you won't regret it!
