Christmas Decoration Ideas: Giant Hot Cocoa Mug
TikTok is my number 2 go to place for creative ideas, Pinterest is number 1! I saw a creator on TikTok create this and I had to give it a try!
The materials to create this were under $30 bucks. I love this time of year because I get to allow my creativity to flow and have some fun!! I still have some minor adjustments to make before I put it outside but I still love the way it came together! 😇
It was pretty easy to make if you would like to give it a try here are the materials:
Lowe’s planter large
1 small container of Joint Compound
Small Brown Spray Paint
Small Styrofoam Cone
1 inch pipe insulation
White acrylic paint
Glue sticks for glue gun or E6000
Making this giant hot cocoa mug decoration was such a fun and rewarding DIY project, especially seeing how much joy it brings to our Christmas display! Like many viral crafts, I first spotted the idea for a 'giant hot chocolate mug' on my feeds and instantly knew I had to recreate it. The original article listed out the basic materials, but I wanted to share a deeper dive into the actual process and some tips I picked up along the way to help you bring your own festive vision to life. First, let's talk about that base – the 'large brown plastic planter.' This is the secret to the mug's shape! You'll want to place it upside down. For the handle, the pipe insulation works perfectly. Bend it into a C-shape and secure it to the side of the planter. I found that using a strong adhesive like E6000 first, and then reinforcing with a hot glue gun once it's set, gives it extra stability. Now for the 'cocoa' effect and the 'mug' itself. After priming your planter, grab that brown spray paint for the 'hot cocoa' surface on the inverted base. For the mug portion, you can choose any color, but I absolutely loved the classic festive feel of a 'red hot cocoa mug' as shown in my inspiration. Don't worry if the surface isn't perfectly smooth; the joint compound is your friend here! Once the base paint is dry, apply a thin layer of joint compound to the planter's sides to create a textured, ceramic-like finish. It really elevates the look from just a plastic planter to a cozy, substantial mug. Let it dry completely, then paint your chosen mug color over it. The 'whipped cream' and 'marshmallows' detail is truly what makes this piece magical. For the whipped cream, white acrylic paint works wonders. You can get creative with how you apply it to give it a swirled, realistic look around the rim. For the marshmallows, I used small foam balls, painted white, and glued them into the 'whipped cream.' The 'candy cane' detail, like the one I added, can be a real candy cane (sealed for outdoors) or a DIY foam version. Small foam 'snowflakes' glued onto the red mug add a lovely wintery touch. If you're planning to place your 'giant cocoa mug' outdoors, a crucial step is weatherproofing. After all your paint and glue have dried, apply a clear, outdoor-safe sealant. This will protect your beautiful creation from rain and moisture, keeping those 'snowflakes' and vibrant colors intact throughout the season. I learned this the hard way with another decoration, so trust me on this! Beyond the classic red and white, imagine a mint green mug with peppermint candy toppings, or a rustic metallic gold mug with cinnamon sticks. You could even add battery-operated fairy lights inside the 'cocoa' for a glowing effect at night. This project is so adaptable! Whether you place it by your front door, nestled in a garden bed, or as a statement piece in your living room, this 'giant hot chocolate mug' is guaranteed to be a conversation starter. It’s incredibly satisfying to create something so charming and unique that truly embodies the spirit of the holidays. Give it a try – you might surprise yourself with your crafting skills!
