My low waste apartment ♻️✨ easy tips

Having a lot of trash for me is a 🚫 NO GO. I only have one small trash can and I need to keep the trash low to save waste.

Switching to reusable stuff helps the most; I got rid of any non-reuseable or plastic items. This can be done with like paper towels, shopping bags, Tupperware containers, and more.

Get a water filter pitcher instead of buying plastic water bottles! And switch to mini products or soap 🧼 bars instead of big bottles to cut down on trash waste.

... Read moreOkay, let's talk about those plastic bags from your shopping trips – like the white ones from Target you might get for kitchen items. Instead of immediately tossing them, they're actually perfect liners for my smaller kitchen bins! It’s a super simple hack, but it saves me from buying dedicated small trash bags and gives these plastics a second life before their final disposal. Just make sure to double-bag if you're putting anything wet in there to avoid leaks into your black trash can. Beyond reusing bags, the kitchen is often where so much waste happens. My biggest game-changer for food scraps? Composting! Even in an apartment, it's totally doable. I keep a small countertop composter for fruit peels, veggie trimmings, and coffee grounds. Then, I either take it to a local community garden drop-off point or utilize a pick-up service if one is available in my area. It drastically cuts down on what goes into my actual trash can, and it feels good knowing those nutrients are returning to the earth. Another thing that's made a huge difference is how I shop. I try to buy in bulk whenever possible, bringing my own reusable jars and cloth bags for things like grains, nuts, and even liquid soap refills. This cuts down on packaging immensely. And those beautiful glass jars and containers you see in my kitchen? They’re not just for aesthetics; they securely store everything from pantry staples to leftovers, meaning zero plastic wrap or single-use baggies are needed. It’s a sustainable storage solution that looks great too! And what about cleaning products? Instead of buying multiple plastic bottles of spray cleaners, I've switched to concentrated tablets or simple DIY solutions. A basic mix of vinegar, baking soda, and water can tackle so many household chores. For dishes, those soap bars aren't just for your body! I use a solid dish soap bar with a good scrubbing brush, eliminating yet another plastic bottle from my routine. You already know about the Brita water filter pitcher – it's a non-negotiable for me to avoid plastic water bottles! But think about other drinks too. Making your own iced tea or coffee at home and carrying it in a reusable bottle or tumbler saves so many disposable cups. It’s not just about the plastic; it’s about reducing the entire production and disposal chain. It’s all about a mindset shift. Every time I pick up something new, I ask myself: 'Do I really need this? Is there a reusable alternative? What will happen to it when I'm done?' It’s not about being perfect, but about making conscious choices. Even small steps, like reusing those Target bags, add up to a much more eco-friendly apartment. You've got this!
