why is my brain getting SO loud at night ??

i used to think something was wrong with me... like, why could i be fine during the day but then the second i laid down at night, my thoughts would spiral into overdrive? it felt like my brain had been saving up all its loudest, most chaotic thoughts for the exact moment i was finally ready to rest.

turns out… it wasn’t random. when we’re busy, distracted, and rushing around during the day, our nervous system is often stuck in “go mode.” it keeps us moving, but it also keeps us from fully processing emotions, worries, and stress. then, at night, when the world finally gets quiet, our brain sees it as its one chance to dump everything it’s been holding onto.

for me, this looked like replaying awkward conversations from 5 years ago, stressing about to-do lists that didn’t matter, and imagining the absolute worst case scenarios. i’d end up lying there for hours, exhausted but unable to shut my brain off.

if your brain gets louder at night too, you’re not alone. sometimes it’s not about silencing your thoughts, it’s about giving them space earlier in the day so they don’t explode when you finally lay down.

does this happen to you? what’s the loudest your brain gets at night & what helps you calm it down??

... Read moreMany people experience an increase in the noise level of their thoughts at night, and this phenomenon is more common than you might think. The quiet and darkness that come with bedtime create an environment where the brain, no longer distracted by daytime activities, seizes the opportunity to process unresolved emotions and stress. The phrase “brain dump” mentioned in the image text is a helpful tactic often recommended by mental health experts. It involves writing down all your worries, to-do lists, and reflections before going to bed. This practice offloads mental clutter onto paper, allowing the brain to relax instead of continuously cycling through the same thoughts. It can be as simple as jotting down the day's events, lingering anxieties, or planning for tomorrow to create mental space. Another reason our minds become loud at night relates to the nervous system being stuck in “go mode” during the day, as the article indicates. Stress and constant busyness prevent full emotional processing, and when we finally rest, these unprocessed thoughts come rushing forward. Creating moments of mindfulness or brief relaxation breaks during daytime can help your nervous system gradually shift out of this high-alert state. Engaging in calming bedtime routines can also make a significant difference. Practices like deep breathing exercises, guided meditation, or listening to soothing sounds signal to your brain that it’s time to wind down. Consistency helps train your mind to associate these cues with the transition to rest. Lastly, be patient with yourself. Nighttime overthinking often connects to deeper emotions or anxieties that need attention. Talking with friends, journaling regularly, or seeking professional help when feelings become overwhelming can provide long-term relief. By acknowledging that your noisy brain isn't malfunctioning but simply trying to express itself, you open the door to more compassionate self-care. Implementing brain dumps and soothing nighttime rituals can transform restless nights into peaceful ones.

The thing I never say out loud is…
Because we all have something. A truth we carry in silence. A story that trembles under the surface. A feeling that’s too messy, too raw, too much to speak. But here’s the thing: Writing doesn’t need you to say it perfectly. It just needs you to be real. So set a timer for 15 minutes. W

Why is my brain so loud at night?
I always struggle with falling asleep. Magnesium and no screen time helps a lot, but sometimes that random thoughts can’t let me sleep. It’s normally thoughts I don’t have while I’m awake, during my day, when I can think about it. They come during night time, when I lay my head on my pillow.
