November is Child Grief Awareness Month

🦋 November is Child Grief Awareness Month 💙

This month is dedicated to recognizing and supporting children who are grieving the loss of someone they love.

It began as Child Grief Awareness Day, founded in 2008 by the Highmark Caring Place, a center devoted to helping grieving children, adolescents, and their families heal. Over time, this day expanded into a full month of awareness, compassion, and connection. 💫

The blue butterfly symbolizes hope, transformation, and remembrance — a reminder that healing is possible, and love continues even after loss.

🗓️ Child Grief Awareness Day is observed on the third Thursday in November, and this year it falls on November 20th.

Throughout November, communities, schools, and families come together to:

💙 Increase understanding of childhood grief

💙 Spark open, honest conversations

💙 Create spaces of compassion and support

The goal is simple but powerful:

✨ To make sure every grieving child feels seen, heard, and supported. ✨

That mission is at the heart of my children’s book series, A Child’s Journey Through Grief — written to help children and families find words, comfort, and hope after loss.

Through stories like

📖 "But i Don’t Want to Say GOODBYE!"

📖 "It’s OK to Be Happy!"

📖 "Let’s Celebrate!"

💬 and "Remember, Love, Celebrate: Creative Activities for Healing" Companion Activity & Coloring Book,

this series gently guides children through the emotions of grief — helping them remember loved ones, embrace healing, and celebrate the love that lives on. 🌈

Every page is a reminder: it’s okay to grieve, it’s okay to smile, and it’s okay to work towards healing. 💕

... Read moreNovember is observed annually as Child Grief Awareness Month, a compassionate initiative aiming to shed light on the unique challenges children face when coping with the loss of a loved one. This month, and especially Child Grief Awareness Day on the third Thursday of November, offers an important opportunity for families, educators, and communities to come together in support. Children’s experiences of grief can be complex and differ significantly from adult grief. Unlike adults, children often express their feelings through behavior, play, or drawing, which can sometimes be overlooked or misunderstood. That’s why awareness and understanding are crucial during this time. The blue butterfly has emerged as a touching symbol of hope, transformation, and remembrance throughout Child Grief Awareness Month. It gently represents the ongoing journey of healing and the enduring love for those who have passed away. Many organizations, including schools and community groups, use this symbol in educational materials and events to foster empathy and open conversations with children. Programs and books like the "A Child’s Journey Through Grief" series provide vital tools for children and families navigating emotional pain. Titles such as "But I Don’t Want to Say GOODBYE!" and "It’s OK to Be Happy!" offer reassurance that all feelings, including joy and sorrow, are valid parts of healing. Complementary activities and coloring books further encourage children to express their emotions creatively, building pathways for recovery. It is important to create safe and judgment-free environments where grieving children feel seen and supported. Schools and caregivers can play a pivotal role by implementing grief education and facilitating conversations that respect each child’s individual process. Resources from grief-support centers like the Highmark Caring Place also provide professional guidance and community connections. Through heightened awareness, understanding, and compassionate action during November, everyone can contribute to making sure that no grieving child feels alone. The collective effort affirms that healing is possible and that the love for those lost continues to shine brightly in a child’s heart.
