Queer books by indigenous authors ✨

2024/6/23 Edited to

... Read moreI've been on such an incredible journey lately, diving deep into books that truly resonate, especially those by Indigenous and queer authors. It’s been an absolute revelation to discover voices that bring such unique perspectives to the literary world. And honestly, if you haven't yet explored the works of Joshua Whitehead, you're in for a treat! For those searching for books that challenge and inspire, Joshua Whitehead is a name you need to know. As a Two-Spirit Oji-Cree author, his writing beautifully weaves together themes of indigeneity, queerness, and identity with such raw honesty and poetic grace. I was particularly captivated by his collection of essays, 'Making Love With The Land.' This book felt like a conversation, exploring his relationship with the land, his body, and his Indigeneity in ways that were both deeply personal and universally resonant. It's not just a read; it's an experience that makes you reflect on your own connections to place and self. I found myself highlighting so many passages, just absorbing his profound insights. Then there’s his groundbreaking poetry collection, 'Love After The End: An Anthology of Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer Speculative Fiction.' While the full title might suggest a collection, his contribution stands out. This work dives into Indigenous futurisms, reimagining worlds where queer and Two-Spirit love thrives post-apocalypse. It’s powerful, hopeful, and fiercely imaginative. Reading it felt like witnessing a radical act of love and survival. If you're looking for something that pushes boundaries and offers fresh narratives, these two books by Joshua Whitehead are absolute must-reads. They've genuinely broadened my understanding and appreciation for contemporary Indigenous literature. Beyond Joshua, there are so many other phenomenal Indigenous authors writing incredible queer stories or crafting fantasy novels with Indigenous roots that I just have to share. For instance, Darcie Little Badger's 'Elatsoe' is a young adult gothic fantasy that completely swept me away. It's rich with Lipan Apache folklore, following a girl who can raise the ghosts of animals. The mystery and the world-building are just enchanting! And if you're a fantasy lover, you absolutely cannot miss Moniquill Blackgoose's 'To Shape A Dragon's Breath.' Imagine a world where dragons exist, and a young Indigenous woman from a colonized nation is called to study at a dragon academy. It's got dragons, magic, and tackles themes of colonialism and cultural identity in a really smart way. I was hooked from the first page! Then there's the poignant poetry of Billy-Ray Belcourt's 'This Wound Is A World.' His words explore what it means to be queer and Indigenous in Canada with such vulnerability and strength. It’s a collection that delves into grief, joy, and resistance, leaving a lasting impression. Finally, for something a bit more adventurous, Melissa Blair's 'A Broken Blade' is a fantastic Indigenous-authored fantasy. It's full of fae, hidden identities, and thrilling stakes. I loved the protagonist's journey and the clever twists. These books aren't just entertaining; they're vital, offering perspectives that are often marginalized in mainstream literature. Picking up any of these, especially during Pride Month, is a fantastic way to support Indigenous voices and immerse yourself in stories that will stay with you long after you turn the last page. Happy reading, everyone!
