Is Glycolic Acid Overrated?

I’ve been seeing glycolic acid used in so many different ways lately, not just for facial exfoliation but also for body care, underarms, and even scalp routines.

I understand it’s a powerful AHA that helps with texture, dark spots, and skin turnover but I’m starting to wonder if it’s becoming one of those ingredients people are using a little too often or in too many areas at once.

Can overusing glycolic acid actually lead to irritation or a weakened skin barrier? Or is it safe as long as it’s used correctly?

What’s your experience with it have you seen real improvements or did you have to cut back because it became too strong?

... Read moreIn recent years, glycolic acid has become a star ingredient, celebrated for its ability to exfoliate the skin, improve texture, and lighten dark spots. However, with its surge in popularity, it's crucial to understand both how to use it effectively and the potential drawbacks of overuse. From my personal experience, glycolic acid can deliver impressive results when introduced gradually into a skincare routine. I started using a 7% glycolic acid toner, similar to widely recommended formulations, applying it two to three times a week initially. This cautious approach helped me avoid irritation while still benefiting from smoother, more radiant skin. One important lesson I've learned is that applying glycolic acid to multiple areas at once—face, body, underarms, and even scalp—can increase the risk of skin sensitivity and barrier weakening. The skin in these areas varies in thickness and resilience, so adjusting concentration and frequency is key. For example, underarms may be prone to more irritation, so less frequent application or lower concentration products are advisable. Additionally, patch testing is essential before incorporating glycolic acid extensively. If you notice redness, excessive dryness, or stinging, it’s wise to reduce usage or take breaks to allow skin recovery. Pairing glycolic acid with gentle moisturizers and sunscreen is also vital, as it can increase photosensitivity. In summary, glycolic acid is far from overrated if used thoughtfully. It offers noticeable improvements in skin tone and texture, but understanding your skin's tolerance and avoiding overuse ensures you reap benefits without compromising your barrier function. Sharing your experiences or adjustments can help us all better navigate this popular ingredient’s role in our skincare routines.
