Police Raid in Rio: Causing 120+ Death

A massive police assault in Rio's favelas left over a hundred people dead and raised serious questions about violence and accountability.

1. The Operation & Setting

On 28 October 2025, roughly 2,500 civil and military police officers, backed by helicopters, armored vehicles and drones, launched a large-scale operation in the favelas of Complexo do Alemão and Complexo da Penha in Rio de Janeiro.

The target was the powerful criminal gang Comando Vermelho (“Red Command”), accused of controlling territory and drug trafficking in those low-income communities.

The death toll is officially reported at at least 121, while the state public defender’s office says as many as 132 people may have been killed.

Among the dead were four police officers.
