what happens in the morning? ☀️ #healthyliving #cortisol
From my experience, the way you start your morning truly sets the tone for your entire day. After learning about the cortisol awakening response (CAR) and how our bodies are naturally in a dehydrated, hemoconcentrated state upon waking, I started implementing small but impactful habits. First, drinking a glass of warm water with a pinch of mineral salt and lemon has been a game changer. It not only rehydrates my cells but also gently activates my digestion without overwhelming my system. Adding a bit of mineral salt helps replenish electrolytes that overnight dehydration causes, which supports adrenal balance and cellular hydration. Next, I make it a point to get outside in natural sunlight within 10-15 minutes of waking. This truly helps anchor my circadian rhythm and keeps my cortisol levels normalized rather than spiking them unnecessarily. I’ve found it far more effective than immediately reaching for caffeine. Speaking of caffeine, I now delay my first cup by about 60-90 minutes. This allows my cortisol peak to happen naturally and avoids contributing to stress or jitteriness. I also focus on gentle movement rather than intense workouts right away. Light stretching, slow walking, or even grounding barefoot helps my body transition from a state of sleep to wakefulness without triggering a fight-or-flight response. Finally, I’ve learned to slow my breath for a few minutes each morning, usually practicing nasal breathing to calm the nervous system. It helps me feel more centered and less reactive to sudden stressors. One caution I took to heart is avoiding cold exposure immediately upon waking. While cold showers have benefits, doing them during peak cortisol can dysregulate the nervous system. Timing matters more than I initially thought! Incorporating these mindful practices around hydration, cortisol regulation, and natural light exposure has noticeably improved my energy levels, mood, and overall cardiovascular awareness throughout the day. If you’re looking to optimize your mornings holistically, these insights and habits are worth trying.
