Bharata Natyam - dance of the divine Shiva
At the tender age of 11 years old, 5 years after I began, I stepped onto a stage and completed my Arangetram in Bharatanatyam.
At that age, I may not have fully understand the magnitude of what I was doing. I only knew the countless hours of practice, the discipline, the corrections, the divine clothing, the jewelry, the dance of the Gods and Goddesses.
What I understand now is that my Arangetram was never just a dance recital.
It was a rite of passage.
It taught me commitment long before I understood success.
It taught me resilience long before I faced adversity.
It taught me grace under pressure long before life tested me.
And it connected me to my ancient culture, a tradition, and a lineage that stretches back countless centuries.
As a first-generation Indian American, Bharatanatyam anchored my roots. It taught me that every movement from head to eyes to hands to feet have meaning, every gesture tells a story, and every challenge can be transformed into art.
Looking back decades later, I realize that little 11-year-old girl wasn’t simply learning choreography or just a dance. It is the divine dance of Shiva/Natraj.
The stage lights eventually faded, but the lessons never did.
Even today, those rhythms, values, and traditions continue to guide me through every chapter of life.
Some journeys begin with a single step.
Mine began with bare feet, ankle bells, and a prayer before stepping onto the stage.
