... Read moreEven though my original post focused on my overall Science Olympiad journey, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into what made those 'build events' so memorable and challenging. You know, the kind where you're given seemingly random materials – like, say, a roll of toilet paper and a few other bits – and tasked with building something incredible, often under a strict time limit? That's where the real fun, and sometimes the real frustration, began!
One event that always comes to mind, similar to what some might call a 'Physics Cup,' involved constructing a device that could perform a specific task, often demonstrating a principle of physics with everyday items. Imagine being handed a toilet paper roll, some tape, and maybe a few craft sticks, and told to build a contraption that could launch a small object the furthest, or perhaps protect an egg dropped from a height. The pressure was definitely on!
My team and I would spend hours, sometimes even weeks, brainstorming and prototyping. We'd sketch out designs, test different materials (yes, even different brands of toilet paper for their tensile strength!), and troubleshoot countless failures. It wasn't just about knowing the physics principles; it was about applying them creatively, thinking outside the box, and learning from every single mistake. There were countless late nights in the science lab, surrounded by various pieces of 'equipment' and discarded attempts, but the camaraderie kept us going. My advice for anyone tackling these: start early, test often, and don't be afraid to completely scrap a design if it's not working. The iterative process is key!
What I loved most about these build events was the teamwork. Each person brought a unique perspective – one might be a whiz at calculating trajectories, another a master of structural integrity, and someone else brilliant at problem-solving on the fly. We learned to rely on each other, to communicate effectively, and to celebrate even the smallest victories, like when our prototype finally held together for more than ten seconds! Our team, often wearing matching hoodies (like the ones I saw in some old photos!), felt like a true unit.
The competition day for these events was always exhilarating. Seeing other teams' ingenious (and sometimes hilarious) creations, the tension as judges measured distances or observed performance, and that incredible rush when your own build event actually worked as planned – it was unforgettable. We'd often travel together, sometimes even on a 'DEMING WILDCAT' bus, making the whole experience an even bigger adventure. And then, at the awards ceremony, seeing our team up on stage, sometimes clutching those shiny medals or even a trophy, made all those hours of hard work, planning, and frantic building completely worth it. It wasn't just about winning; it was about the journey of discovery, the thrill of creation, and the bond formed with my teammates through those shared challenges. These are the memories that truly shape your high school experience, pushing you to think differently and work together, preparing you for bigger STEM challenges ahead. They really taught me how to think critically under pressure!
