If this were ur kitchen, how would u remodel it?

I plan to do a goth kitchen. I know it’s hard to imagine at the moment, but it’s my dream. I have already redone this kitchen once. I painted the cabinets white (mistake) refinished the countertops, painted the walls, made custom curtains and a custom clock for my husband’s sake. He loves Mickey, and that’s great! But I am sick of staring at it. I thought I could live with it, but I just can’t. I want my dream kitchen. I am, unfortunately, stuck with these horrible floors for now. I plan to:

Use the pictured wallpaper on the tops of the walls, and repaint the bottom of the walls with a dark charcoal paint, then do a dry brush of a lighter grey over each individual “brick.” I want to repaint the cabinets in a semi gloss/gloss black and replace the knobs with crystal skull knobs (purchased but waiting on arrival). Butcher block countertops and island stained deep cherry, or lighter grey countertops (think concrete color) Replace the light fixtures with iron Victorian gothic ones, lantern style. Turn the space by the fridge into a giant pantry (we need it, trust me). Eventually replace the fridge with a new one, and possibly the dishwasher too. Paint the doorways white to match windows (and if I hate that they’ll all go black as well).

But I’m curious, this is a HUGE kitchen (pics do not do it justice). What would you do with it if it was yours?

... Read moreRemodeling an older kitchen, especially in an old house or even a mobile home, comes with its own unique set of challenges and exciting possibilities. I totally get the feeling of wanting to transform a space that just doesn't feel like 'you' anymore, just like wanting to swap out those familiar white cabinets and a cheerful Mickey theme for something bolder and more personal. My own journey through kitchen makeovers has taught me a lot about working with what you've got and envisioning something completely new! It's all about seeing the potential hidden beneath those dated surfaces. One of the first things I always consider when looking at an older kitchen is the bones. Sometimes, the layout is surprisingly functional, even if the aesthetics are outdated. For example, if you have an arched doorway, that's a beautiful architectural feature you might want to highlight, not hide! Instead of tearing everything down, think about how paint, new hardware, and creative tiling can utterly change the vibe. I've seen kitchens with original wood-paneled walls go from drab to fab with just a coat of light paint, contrasting trim, or even by embracing a darker, moodier palette if that's your style. Don't underestimate the power of a fresh coat of paint – it's often the most impactful and budget-friendly change you can make. Flooring is often a big hurdle, isn't it? Like dealing with terracotta floor tiles you can't immediately rip out, or even old linoleum. My trick? Work around it for now. Large area rugs can cover a significant portion, introducing new textures and colors. Alternatively, you can pick up colors from the existing floor in your new design elements to make it feel cohesive rather than clashing. If a full floor replacement isn't in the budget yet, consider professional cleaning or even specialized floor paints for certain materials to bridge the gap until your dream floor can be installed. When planning your remodel for an older space, think about incorporating modern conveniences without losing the home's character. Upgrading appliances is a no-brainer for efficiency and aesthetics, but also consider things like adding a pull-out pantry if space allows, or much-needed under-cabinet lighting. Victorian gothic lanterns, for instance, can add character while providing both task and ambient illumination. And don't forget the details! Unique knobs – like those crystal skull ones – or a statement wallpaper can truly personalize your space and make it feel like your dream kitchen, whether that dream is goth, farmhouse, minimalist, or something entirely unique. For those tackling a DIY old kitchen remodel, a few tips from my experience: Plan, Plan, Plan: Measure everything twice, sketch out your ideas, and create mood boards. This helps visualize the end result and avoid costly mistakes. Budget Wisely: Prioritize what you need vs. what you *want*. Sometimes, a phased approach is best, especially for bigger ticket items like appliances or countertops. Embrace Imperfections: Older homes often have quirks. Sometimes, working with them rather than fighting them can lead to a more charming and unique outcome. Source Creatively: Flea markets, antique shops, and online marketplaces are treasure troves for unique hardware, lighting, or even cabinets that can be repurposed. This is where you find those one-of-a-kind pieces that truly make a space your own. Don't Rush: Especially with older homes, unexpected issues can pop up. Give yourself extra time for each step of the renovation. Ultimately, remodeling an old kitchen is a journey of transformation. It's about taking a space that might feel dated or uninspiring and infusing it with your personality and vision. Whether you're aiming for a dramatic goth kitchen makeover or a bright, airy refresh, the process of breathing new life into an old space is incredibly rewarding. I'm excited to see what unique ideas you come up with for your own kitchen transformation!

Clean it, get rid of the hanging pot rack and replace with either a corner one or a shelf unit. Otherwise, this kitchen looks perfect.
