You’re Not Crazy. You’re Wired.

There are parts of you that did not come from trauma.

They came from temperament.

Before coping.

Before attachment wounds.

Before church hurt.

Before relationship disappointment.

You were wired a certain way.

The four classical temperaments Sanguine, Choleric, Melancholy, and Phlegmatic are ancient personality frameworks originally described by Hippocrates and later expanded by Galen. Long before personality tests and Instagram quizzes, people were trying to understand why we respond differently to the same world.

Some of you feel everything loudly.

Some of you lead instinctively.

Some of you analyze until 2 a.m.

Some of you just want peace at any cost.

That’s not random. That’s wiring.

Temperament is your baseline nervous system energy. It’s your default speed. Your emotional tone. Your instinct under pressure.

And here’s the grown woman part:

Temperament explains behavior.

It does not excuse immaturity.

Knowing your temperament helps you:

• Stop shaming yourself

• Stop comparing yourself

• Stop trying to date someone who is neurologically allergic to how you operate

• Stop spiritualizing what is simply personality difference

When you’re stressed, do you get louder, quieter, sharper, or softer?

That answer tells you something.

... Read moreLearning about the four classical temperaments—Sanguine, Choleric, Melancholy, and Phlegmatic—has truly transformed how I view myself and others. These temperaments, first outlined by Hippocrates and later expanded by Galen, offer a timeless framework to understand personality beyond modern labels. Each temperament describes a baseline nervous system energy, shaping not only how we express emotions but also how we react under pressure. For example, as someone who relates to the Melancholy temperament, I often find myself deep in thought late into the night, analyzing situations and feelings meticulously. This can sometimes feel isolating or overwhelming, but appreciating this trait as a wiring rather than a flaw has helped me stop comparing myself to more outgoing or spontaneous friends. It allows me to embrace my natural pace and emotional tone. Recognizing temperament differences is especially helpful in relationships. Early on, I tried to change myself to fit someone else’s way of operating, leading to frustration on both sides. Understanding that some partners may be neurologically 'allergic' to certain behaviors has been a game-changer. It's the first step to choosing compatibility wisely and reducing unnecessary conflict. Stress responses also vary widely. I've noticed that during stress, my voice softens and I withdraw—a classic Phlegmatic response for some, but different for others who might become louder or sharper. Reflecting on these reactions offers insight into managing stress more mindfully and communicating needs effectively. Temperament does not excuse immaturity or unhealthy behavior, but it provides a compassionate lens for self-awareness. Knowing your wiring empowers you to stop shaming yourself for traits ingrained by temperament rather than trauma or choice. It’s about embracing your authentic self with kindness and learning how to navigate the world in a way that respects your unique design.
