Sitting for extended periods often leads to tight hips, and I noticed how those subtle aches would grow into persistent discomforts that made concentration even harder. The low back pain from maintaining one position too long was a warning sign my body was sending.
Neck and shoulder tension became almost a daily companion, especially after long virtual meetings that demanded I stay alert and engaged even when my energy was dwindling. The mental fatigue was insidious—it didn't end with my workday but lingered, creating a sense of exhaustion that rest alone couldn't fix.
What really helped me was shifting my perspective—I stopped seeing these physical signs as separate from my mental state and started acknowledging that my body was working hard to support my mind. Simple stretches throughout the day, like hip openers and gentle backbends, made a remarkable difference. I also began to consciously release tension by standing up and moving regularly, paying attention to tight spots, and using deep breathing to help my nervous system reset.
It’s important to remember that what you’re holding—whether it’s physical tension or emotional weight—is labor. Your body absorbs and adjusts silently while you’re keeping everything else running smoothly. Giving yourself permission to pause and nurture both your body and mind is not just beneficial, it’s necessary. Restoration is a form of self-respect and an essential part of sustaining your ability to "hold space" and stay present in demanding environments.
If you find yourself feeling "just tired," try to check in deeper. Notice where your body feels the strain and gently move or stretch those areas. Prioritize moments where you can unplug and let your nervous system calm down. This holistic approach has made a dramatic improvement in my well-being, allowing me to continue my work with more resilience and ease.
