The Therapy Between Therapy Sessions
One thing people don't always see about being a therapist is how much energy it takes to be fully present for another human being.
Between back-to-back sessions, documentation, treatment planning, phone calls, and care coordination, it can be surprisingly easy to realize it's 3:00 p.m. and you still haven't eaten or had enough water.
I've been guilty of telling clients how important self-care is while quietly convincing myself I could wait "just one more session."
Lately, I've been trying to change that.
Not because I have a perfect wellness routine, but because I'm realizing that taking care of myself isn't separate from being a good therapist. It's part of being one.
This little protein drink has become one of those practical habits that helps me fuel my body between sessions when I don't have time for a full meal. It's not glamorous, and it doesn't replace a balanced lunch, but it's a reminder that caring for myself deserves to be just as intentional as caring for everyone else.
As therapists, we spend our days holding space for grief, trauma, anxiety, relationship struggles, and life's hardest moments. That work requires emotional presence, mental clarity, and physical energy.
We can't pour from an empty cup forever.
I'm learning that wellness isn't built through grand gestures. It's built through ordinary choices we make over and over again.
Sometimes healing others begins with remembering not to neglect ourselves.
Therapists, what's one small habit that helps you make it through a busy day?
