Marrying your first love?

I sometimes wonder if it’s a mistake getting married to my first love.

On paper it’s the dream: your first kiss, first time, first everything is shared with one guy who you’ll stay with the rest of your life. Your childhood sweetheart, your classmate, your one and only.

But I’ve hardly seen anyone talk about how terrifying it must be when you’re new to relationships entirely, and you don’t even have a chance to go through the tears from a breakup, the learning from your mistakes, the knowing what it is you’re actually looking for. How do I know what’s missing if I’ve never had it?

It’s even worse when you’re not your partner’s first. You aren’t learning together, he’s already at least twice as sure of what he wants as you are. You’re on shaky legs figuring out how to express affection and he’s already timing when to be on one knee.

Of course it was my childhood dream to find the right guy right from the start and commit. But now that I’m older (but certainly not any wiser) I start to wonder if the innocent mistakes one makes as a naive teen serves as vital learning experiences.

Most of all I fear the generational crash out that’ll happen if we ever break up. Can you imagine? BTO, marriage, every damn thing I’ve shared with one guy. I genuinely question if I will remain sane if it ever happens.

If anyone’s watched Abbott Elementary maybe you’ll recognize Janine’s relationship with Tariq in mine. (Also if you watched Abbott please connect with me because clearly you are Cultured.)

I’m not saying that committing to the first guy will always fail. Certainly people have succeeded. But more people have succeeded after failing in relationships, after discovering what they want and don’t want in a relationship. I’ve learnt everything I know from this one man. It’s not a cumulation of experiences, of heartbreaks and grief that I’ve been forged from.

So here’s my inane ramblings. Has anyone ever been with only one guy and things worked out? (Hoping to hear from people in their 30s at the very least, lol.)

... Read moreReflecting on the uncertainties of marrying your first love, it's natural to wonder about the chances of lasting happiness. Many people hesitate, questioning if there's wisdom lost without prior relationship experiences. From my perspective, having only known one partner means all growth is intertwined with this single relationship—there are no past heartbreaks or lessons from breakups to guide you. This can create unique challenges, especially if your partner has more relationship experience than you. Personally, I've found it valuable to openly communicate these feelings with my partner. Understanding that my journey of discovery is ongoing has helped ease some doubts. For couples in similar positions, nurturing patience and self-awareness becomes key. Also, there is something to be said about the deep bond that comes when two people learn about love together from the very start—it can foster strong intimacy and mutual support. On the flip side, worries about the impact of a potential breakup weigh heavily. Sharing so much history with one person amplifies the fear of loss and emotional upheaval. Some find reassurance in building a supportive network outside the relationship, from close friends to therapists, to maintain their sense of self and stability. Ultimately, every relationship is unique. While past experience can aid in understanding what you want, it's not a definitive rule. Many have successfully married their first love because of mutual respect, effort, and growth alongside each other. If you’re in your 30s or beyond and have navigated this path, your stories and insights could truly help those of us still figuring it out.

In my late 20s, and am trying to BTO with my boyfriend currently - he’s my first, and i’m his 5th :’) but i totally get where you’re coming from. I often wonder - am I settling down? Am I missing out from someone more suitable or “better”? then again I stop myself from these wandering thoughts, as I realised, regardless of how much “better” someone else is, nothing is perfect, and as long as I can still see effort from my partner, I feel that that’s enough ✨ (is my current thoughts) HAHAHAH maybe 10 years down the road, it may have changed.

If you ask what I bring to the table…
this question needs to go. “what do you bring to the table?” love isn’t a performance or a pitch. the man I’m marrying didn’t ask for a list of qualities, he simply showed up and made room for me to be myself. how would you answer this question, honestly?
