Today, I'm excited to share a unique recipe for a savory spaghetti sauce that not only tantalizes your taste buds but also harnesses the incredible benefits of two powerhouse herbs: mullein and stinging nettle.
Mullein, often recognized for its soothing properties, has been used for centuries to support respiratory health. Its natural compounds may help alleviate coughs and promote lung function, making it a fantastic addition to our sauce.
Meanwhile, stinging nettle is a nutritional powerhouse, packed with vitamins and minerals that can aid in reducing inflammation, acting as an antihistamine, and supporting overall wellness.
Together, these herbs create a flavorful and health-boosting sauce that pairs perfectly with pasta. Join me as we whip up this delightful spaghetti sauce that’s sure to become a staple in your kitchen! (Picky eater approved, you can't taste the added herbs!)
Herbal Spaghetti Sauce Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, drained
- 3 cloves garlic, minced (or 1 tsp garlic powder)
- 1 tsp onion powder
- ¼ cup Italian seasoning
- 1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 tsp black pepper (adjust to taste)
- 1 cup ground beef (I break a bulk pack up into 1 cup servings)
- 1/4 cup dried mullein leaves
- ¼ cup dried stinging nettle leaves
- 2 tbsp Parmesan powder (plus extra for serving)
- Olive oil (for cooking)
Instructions:
1. Brown the Ground Beef:
- In a skillet over medium heat, add a drizzle of olive oil.
- Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain any excess fat.
2. Add the Aromatics:
- Once the beef is browned, add the minced garlic (or garlic powder), onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Stir and cook for about 1 minute until fragrant.
3. Incorporate the Tomatoes:
- Pour in the tomato sauce and diced tomatoes. Stir to combine.
4. Add the Herbs:
- Add the dried mullein and stinging nettle. Stir well to incorporate the herbs into the sauce.
5. Simmer the Sauce:
- Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to meld together.
6. Finish with Parmesan:
- Stir in the Parmesan powder just before serving. Adjust seasoning with more salt and pepper if needed.
7. Serve:
- Serve the sauce over your cooked spaghetti (whole wheat or protein pasta for extra boost.) Top with additional Parmesan if desired.
Enjoy your flavorful and health-promoting spaghetti sauce!
