Rating a James Patterson novel!

9/3 Edited to

... Read moreAs an avid fan of thriller and mystery novels, I recently listened to 'Lies He Told Me' by James Patterson and David Ellis. While Patterson’s reputation for gripping storytelling precedes him, I found this particular collaboration a bit formulaic and the characters somewhat generic. It felt like many of the twists required a strong suspension of disbelief, which can sometimes detract from the immersive experience I crave in a thriller. What stood out as a personal reading pet peeve was the use of very similar character names, such as Jean and Joan, which made it challenging to follow the plot without stopping to differentiate who was responsible for which action. This experience underscored the importance of distinctive character names to maintain clarity in complex narratives. Despite this, the book was an easy listen, earning a moderate rating of 6 out of 10 from me. As a fan of David Ellis' solo works, I plan to explore more of his non-collaborative novels, hoping for richer character development and more original storytelling. In addition to reviewing 'Lies He Told Me,' I ventured into works by two new authors recommended by readers: TJ Newman and John Hart. 'Falling' by TJ Newman caught my attention immediately with its high-stakes plot involving a plane where the pilot’s family is kidnapped, forcing him to follow fatal orders. The suspenseful premise makes it a must-read for thriller lovers. John Hart's 'The Unwilling' is another promising discovery, set during the Vietnam War era. The story of a young man navigating a dangerous world to clear his brother’s name piqued my interest with its mix of historical fiction and crime thriller elements. Exploring these new authors broadened my reading horizons and reminded me of the value in seeking fresh voices within the thriller genre. Whether it’s Patterson’s familiar style or new, gritty narratives by emerging authors, there’s always a new story to get lost in. For fellow readers, I recommend choosing thrillers that balance strong, unique character identities with engaging, plausible plots to enhance the reading or listening experience. And definitely, pay attention to readers’ recommendations—they often lead to unexpected gems!
