Think Like A Nurse

Nursing school isn’t hard because the material is impossible - it’s hard because no one teaches you how to think like a nurse.

Every exam question, clinical scenario, and Next Gen NCLEX case follows a pattern. Once you learn that pattern, everything starts to click.

This framework walks you through:

✔️ What’s going on with the patient

✔️ Why it’s happening (basic pathophysiology)

✔️ What the biggest risk is right now

✔️ What YOU can do as the nurse

✔️ How to evaluate if it worked

Stop memorizing random facts and start thinking like a nurse.

This is the foundation for clinical judgment, prioritization, and NCLEX success.

Save this. Study it. Use it for every question

... Read moreThinking like a nurse is essential not just for passing nursing school exams and the NCLEX, but for providing safe, effective patient care in clinical practice. The nursing mantra—Assess, Understand, Prioritize, Act, and Reassess—serves as a reliable mental framework to guide your clinical judgment. First, begin every clinical scenario by assessing the patient’s current status: are they stable or unstable? Focus on vital signs and abnormal symptoms to identify what’s going on with the patient. Simple, clear observation beats overcomplication. Avoid jumping to treatment before understanding the problem; instead, determine why the patient is experiencing these symptoms by recalling basic pathophysiology relevant to the affected body system. Next, prioritize the biggest risk or threat to patient safety. Is there an airway obstruction? Is the patient experiencing circulation issues or infection? Safety always takes precedence over comfort or other concerns. Importantly, decide what nursing actions are within your scope and are needed immediately. For example, airway, breathing, and circulation problems must be addressed first. After acting, reassess to evaluate if your intervention worked. This means identifying measurable or observable outcomes that indicate improvement or the need for further action. This step is critical for Next Gen NCLEX, which focuses on your ability to connect information, recognize problems, and evaluate outcomes rather than rote memorization. In practice, develop the habit to systematically ask yourself: - What abnormalities or vital signs are concerning? - What is the basic cause of these abnormalities? - What is the patient’s biggest risk right now? - What can I do immediately and within my nursing role? - How will I know if my intervention is successful? This approach enhances clinical judgment and prioritization skills—key components tested on the NCLEX and vital for real-world nursing. By consistently applying this thinking framework, you move beyond memorizing isolated facts to fully understanding patient care scenarios. It cultivates critical thinking, confidence, and safer nursing practice. Remember, nursing school challenges you not because the material is overly complex, but because no one directly teaches this integrated way of thinking. Adopting this framework bridges that gap, preparing you for exams and clinical realities alike.
