Thyroid: Nursing Review

Throughout my clinical nursing experiences, understanding the nuanced presentations of thyroid disorders like hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism significantly improved my patient assessments and care planning. Hypothyroidism often manifests subtly with symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, bradycardia, cold intolerance, constipation, and dry skin — these signs reflect a decreased metabolic rate. In practice, I observed that patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or those who have undergone thyroidectomy require diligent monitoring for complications like myxedema coma. Administering levothyroxine and educating patients on medication adherence and symptom management were crucial components of care. Conversely, hyperthyroidism speeds up metabolism, leading to weight loss, heat intolerance, tachycardia, tremors, anxiety, and sometimes complications like thyroid storm or exophthalmos in Graves' disease. Managing patients with antithyroid drugs, beta blockers, or radioactive iodine therapy requires careful monitoring for side effects and patient reassurance given the potential severity. In my experience, integrating thorough patient education about the importance of medication compliance, symptom recognition, and lifestyle adjustments greatly enhances outcomes. For example, counseling on dietary iodine intake and stress management helped some patients maintain better thyroid balance. Overall, combining theoretical knowledge from nursing reviews with hands-on patient care deepens one’s competency in addressing thyroid disorders effectively, especially for NCLEX preparation and nursing practice. Remember, regular assessments and individualized care plans are key in supporting patients with these metabolic conditions.
