Homeless in Vancouver...

Experiencing homelessness in a city like Vancouver exposes many harsh realities few often consider. After being kicked out, carrying something as symbolic yet practical as a Condor machete can feel like both a shield and a companion during nights spent walking deserted streets. My failed photography project was more than just a setback—it was a reflection of the unpredictable nature of life when stability is stripped away. Living without a home in Vancouver means facing cold nights, uncertain shelter, and the need to constantly stay vigilant. This city, known for its natural beauty, also has one of the highest rates of homelessness in Canada. The struggle involves finding not only a safe place to sleep but also access to food, hygiene facilities, and social support. Survival strategies often include exploring hidden corners of the city or, as I did, wandering around nearby islands, hoping for moments of escape or inspiration. However, these experiences can be isolating and filled with despair. Despite these challenges, there’s a resilience that grows—a strength born from adversity. For anyone facing or witnessing homelessness, it’s important to recognize the complexity of these experiences. Assistance programs exist, but many find barriers due to mental health, stigma, or lack of resources. Community outreach and empathy are key in fostering hope and providing avenues for change. My journey is a testament to the fact that behind every person on the street is a story worth hearing—stories of loss, courage, and the undying hope for a better tomorrow.
