I regret being induced.

2024/5/1 Edited to

... Read moreReflecting on my own challenging birth experience, which led to deep regret about getting induced, has prompted me to consider the broader journey many parents face. My story of 34 hours of relentless Pitocin pain, two failed epidurals, and an eventual C-section, all stemming from an elective induction when my "body wasn't ready," really highlights how unpredictable and intense labor can be. When you're told about "getting induced," it often sounds like a controlled process, a way to schedule and manage. But in my case, and for many, the reality can be far from it. I remember the impatience, the desire to meet my baby, which led to the choice of an elective induction. Looking back, I wish I had more fully understood that while induction can be medically necessary and life-saving for some, for others, like me, when the body isn't spontaneously ready, it can lead to a more difficult path. The process of getting the induction rolling took multiple attempts, and the experience felt like an uphill battle from the start. The intensity of "Pitocin pain" is something I couldn't have truly prepared for. It's often described as different from natural contractions – more constant, less rhythmic, and incredibly overwhelming. For me, it was excruciating, making me wish for death at times, especially as my labor stalled at 6cm dilated. The exhaustion of being in such intense pain for 34 hours, without food for almost two days, and hardly any sleep, wore me down completely. I had imagined a different kind of strength, but Pitocin pain pushed me beyond what I thought I could endure, making the failed epidurals even more devastating. It felt like my body was fighting against a process it hadn't initiated naturally. The decision to ask for a c-section, which I had initially hoped to avoid, came from a place of pure desperation and exhaustion. The trauma of that long, difficult labor, followed by the unexpected surgery, is something I'm still working through. It reinforces the idea that every birth story is unique, and while we might have hopes and plans, birth has a way of unfolding on its own terms. My regret about being induced is profound, stemming from the belief that if I had waited for labor to start naturally, perhaps the outcome, or at least the journey, might have been different. This experience has taught me the importance of truly listening to your body and advocating for what feels right for you, even when faced with external pressures or personal impatience. The hope for a VBAC one day is a way for me to look forward, to envision a healing and perhaps a different kind of birth experience.
