Reason #7 Why I Love Homeschool

Choice. Whereas flexibility is the root of why I love homeschool, choice is like a tree trunk supporting all the other branches I’ve written about including, but not limited to, travel, socialization, and reading. Choice encompasses all the decisions we make regarding curriculum, social activities, travel, books, food, and even how we navigate challenges and embrace celebrations. We are able to tailor our lessons to personal interests and individual abilities. When we need to review an important skill for a while, we do. If we decide to push school responsibilities to the afternoon so we can get outside and sled first thing in the morning, we do. If we try an activity and it doesn’t work, we move on. If our moods are low, we take it easy. When our moods are excitable, we go on adventures. This does not mean my kiddos are able to choose wiggling out of school work when they don’t feel like doing it (which is basically everyday). On the contrary, we cover a lot of material and complete many tasks everyday. I would argue that having the flexibility of choice drives our productivity and motivation. One of my kiddos doesn’t like writing. However, when given the choice to write about a topic of interest, he will often produce a page or more in his journal. My other kiddo avoids math like the plague. When given the choice of practicing a skill of interest, like measurement by designing dresses (pictured here), she does so happily with significantly less struggle. My point is, like most people, kids included, choice matters. Homeschool allows for a lot of choices, hence a flexible and enjoyable environment for all of us. It’s an approach that took some getting used to when we first decided to homeschool. I’m a type A perfectionist and former public school teacher. I felt I had to recreate the classroom at home and follow curriculum and plans to an absolute “T” else it would end in failure. While we still use curriculums and stick to routines and schedules, I’ve learned to soften that quite a bit. I’ve seen the benefits of allowing my kiddos the time to embrace and explore their interests. I realized that my brain is often muddled with all the “shoulds” I think I need to be doing and riddled with mom guilt for thinking I’m not doing enough. This brain clog comes was born from good intentions, but often has adverse effects for me as it stifles my creativity entirely. My point is, when in doubt about what to do for homeschool, ask your kids and plan from there. They’re incredibly good at identifying what they want when they’re asked. Given a little choice, the mind truly expands! Happy Homeschooling!

... Read moreOne of the most enriching aspects of homeschooling is the ability to customize education through meaningful choice. Unlike traditional classrooms with fixed methods, homeschoolers can craft lessons and schedules that reflect their family’s rhythms and children's passions. This flexibility nurtures intrinsic motivation, making learning both enjoyable and effective. Allowing children to select topics or projects that resonate with them leads to deeper engagement and better retention. For example, a child disinterested in writing might become eager to journal about a favorite hobby or event, turning resistance into enthusiasm. Similarly, math can be integrated into fun, real-world activities like measuring for crafts or cooking, reducing anxiety and building practical skills. Flexibility in homeschooling also supports emotional well-being. Families can adjust daily routines to accommodate moods and energy levels—taking breaks when needed or embracing adventurous learning outdoors—helping kids feel respected and understood. This reduces pressure and the common “shoulds” that often stifle creativity and cause parental guilt. Homeschool parents, even those with a background in traditional education, often start off trying to replicate classroom rigidity but soon find that loosening structure invites better learning outcomes. This shift from control to collaboration encourages children to express preferences and take ownership of their education. Socialization concerns can be addressed by incorporating choices around community activities, clubs, or travel, allowing kids to build relationships with peers in environments that interest them. Homeschooling includes a broad spectrum of options, demonstrating that choice is key not only academically but socially and emotionally. In essence, embracing choice in homeschooling fosters a positive, adaptive learning environment where children thrive. It empowers them to become curious lifelong learners while respecting their individuality and family's values. Whether reviewing skills, exploring new interests, or balancing life's challenges, choice acts as the supportive trunk from which all homeschool benefits branch out. Happy homeschooling truly blossoms when flexibility and student-led learning are prioritized.
