Reason #9 Why I Love Homeschool

Time. This is the hottest commodity around, though it can’t be bought. I find, however, that homeschooling has indeed bought us countless hours. Unless we have a planned activity, like a sport commitment, music lessons, art class, a flight to catch, a play date, birthday party, or doctors’ appointment, we are not beholden to any schedule but our own. Our bodies wake up naturally most days, and we begin lessons after a slow morning of preferred activities. We discuss our plans for the day and alter when necessary. Most importantly, time gives us space. I cannot emphasize this point enough. Homeschool affords us the opportunity to have lengthy discussions or work on involved projects. We can play hours-long soccer matches with other homeschooling friends on a Thursday afternoon, master a new skill (like baking sourdough bread), and plan adventures. We can spend an entire afternoon at a library, or read all morning on a rainy day. We can spend a warm fall afternoon sitting on the beach, simply to enjoy the quiet, as you see pictured here. The time we have certainly leads to boredom, but this is welcome in our house as we believe it’s the best fuel for creativity. Perhaps, most profoundly (for me anyways) is that we have time to sit with our thoughts to tease out ideas and emotions. It allows us the ability to slow down and be present. Homeschool has been the smartest investment we’ve ever made.

... Read moreOne of the most valuable benefits of homeschooling is the gift of time, which many traditional schooling systems fail to provide. Homeschool families can design their days around their natural rhythms, avoiding rigid schedules that often lead to stress and burnout. This unique flexibility allows children to wake up refreshed and begin their lessons when they are most alert and ready to learn, boosting both their engagement and retention. Additionally, homeschooling nurtures a deeper connection between family members. Unlike the rush of split-second transitions between classes in public school, homeschooling lets families slow down and truly be present with one another. This presence fosters meaningful conversations that can deepen understanding and encourage emotional growth. With extra time on their hands, homeschoolers can dive into long-term projects or try new hobbies without feeling pressured by time constraints. Whether it’s mastering a new recipe like sourdough bread, planning science experiments, or simply spending an afternoon lost in books at the library, this freedom fuels creativity and cultivates intrinsic motivation for learning. Moreover, homeschooling provides ample opportunity for outdoor activities and social learning, such as lengthy soccer games with friends or quiet moments at the beach, which enrich the overall educational experience. These moments of unstructured time are essential for developing problem-solving skills, imagination, and resilience. Embracing periods of boredom is another unique aspect of homeschooling that encourages children to explore their own ideas and emotions. Such stillness promotes mindfulness and self-awareness, teaching children how to slow down, reflect, and think critically. In essence, homeschooling is not just about academic achievement; it’s about investing in a lifestyle that values time as the hottest, yet priceless commodity. The ability to personalize education around family life and children’s unique needs leads to a balanced, joyful, and rich learning journey—a powerful reason why so many families choose homeschooling.
