Humility (so far)
Transparency is hard on social media. In a way I feel safe here because no one is engaging with me, but it’s also still scary. I felt led to share what I’ve been learning through the book I’m reading and the studying that goes with it.
It seems I’ve been mistaken about what it means to be humble my whole life. What I was taught in Baptist church was that humbling means to basically not have any self confidence whatsoever. But I’m learning now, at 46, that it means not to think of yourself before others. I saw it summed up as “Humility is not about thinking less of oneself, but thinking of oneself less.”
I realize that’s not earth shattering to most, but to me, it was.
Today was all about the Israelites. And the wandering and the manna. It talked about how the most neglected biblical practice is remembrance. In Dueteronomy, God reminds them of what He’d done. They liked to complain (don’t we all) and not remember what God had done during times of trials.
Our trials are not meaningless, we are to learn from them and use them as monuments to remember God’s faithfulness and be led to humility.
Trials expose weakness and weakness is the perfect place for humility to grow as you learn to rely on God for what you need.
I’m going through a lot of trials right now so I really needed this lesson today. And I wanted to share. As scattered as my sharing is, maybe someone else needs it too.

There are so many amazing resources out there, from study Bibles to online platforms, that can guide you through. One of the biggest game-changers for me has been consistent, even if short, time. Even just 15-20 minutes a day can make a huge difference. Find a quiet spot, maybe with your favorite mug (mine's cat-themed!), and just engage with the text. And that *notebook*? It's not just for scribbling! I use mine to jot down questions that come up, verses that stand out, and personal reflections. This practice of writing things down is so powerful for 'remembrance,' which, as I mentioned before, is something the Israelites often forgot during their trials. It helps solidify what you're learning and how it applies to your life. When you read, try to ask yourself these questions: 'What is this passage telling me about God's character?' 'What is it revealing about human nature?' and most importantly, 'How can I apply this to my life today?' For instance, when I was reading about the Israelites and their complaining after God provided manna, I wrote down how often I complain in my own trials, and how I can consciously choose gratitude instead. This isn't just passive reading; it's active engagement that transforms your heart. Another tip: don't be afraid to use study aids! A good commentary or even an online app can shed light on historical context or difficult passages. Remember, the goal isn't to rush through, but to let God's word speak to you personally. It’s a journey, not a race. And just like I'm learning to rely on God through my trials, leaning into His word through consistent Bible study has been my anchor. It truly helps you put things into perspective and cultivate a heart of humility, knowing that He is in control and faithful, always. So grab your *bible*, your *notebook*, and that favorite cup, and start exploring. You might be surprised at the revelations waiting for you, just like I was!
