If you're planning an African safari, this park should definitely be on your radar. First off, let's talk location! Mikumi National Park is nestled right in the heart of Tanzania, making it super accessible from Dar es Salaam, which is Tanzania's largest city. It’s about a 4-5 hour drive on a good road, which honestly flies by when you’re anticipating seeing all that amazing wildlife. I remember thinking, "Wow, we're really heading into the wild now!" as the landscape changed. It's a fantastic option if you're looking for a shorter safari trip or combining it with a coastal escape like Zanzibar, as I did. Now, about its size – Mikumi is HUGE! It's actually the fourth-largest national park in Tanzania, covering an impressive area of about 3,230 square kilometers (about 1,247 square miles). That's larger than some small countries! This vastness means diverse landscapes, from floodplains to woodlands, and plenty of space for animals to roam freely. When you're driving through, you really get a sense of just how enormous and untouched parts of Africa still are. It’s part of a larger ecosystem with the Selous Game Reserve, which is one of the world’s biggest protected areas, so you can imagine the sheer scale of the wildlife migration routes here. Many people ask about the best time to visit Mikumi, and from my experience, the dry season is generally the most recommended. This runs from June to October. During these months, the vegetation is sparser, and animals gather around the remaining water sources, making them much easier to spot. The roads are also in better condition, which makes for a smoother safari drive. I visited in the mid-dry season and the wildlife sightings were incredible – herds of elephants, zebras, giraffes, and so many antelopes!
