Mammoth Cave National Park Guide
📍Located an hour and a half south of Louisville is the largest cave system on Earth: Mammoth Cave National Park
🚐 We visited this park in early April, and it was the perfect time.
🦇 There are several different ways to experience the caves. You can either go on a self guided or ranger led tour. As the self guided tour is limited on where you can go in the cave we opted for a ranger led tour.
🗺️There are several different tours of varying length you can choose to go on. We opted for the 2 hour historic tour as it went to several locations in the cave we were interested in seeing. I would recommend reading the descriptions of the different tours online and deciding which one seems best for you!
🎟️ We purchased our tickets in advance on Recreation.gov, just to guarantee we could go on the tour we wanted. Tickets can be purchased in person day of at the visitor center, if you wanted to play it by ear.
🏕️We camped in the Mammoth Cave Campground in the park, the sites were nice and because it was the shoulder season the campground was pretty quiet.
🥾 We also recommend hiking some of the above ground trails in the park. We did the “Beneath your feet” trail after our cave tour and it was so cool to walk around and invasion the locations of the cave that you’re standing above!
‼️ With recent cuts to the park budget and staffing please make sure to check out the NPS site for changes and always practice the LNT principles.
