Lactic Acid Mistakes That Damage Your Barrier 🚫

Lactic acid can leave your skin smooth, glowy & hydrated ✨ but mixing it with the wrong ingredients may lead to irritation, redness, peeling & over-exfoliation 🚫

Be careful combining lactic acid with:

❌ Retinoids/Retinol

❌ Benzoyl Peroxide

❌ Glycolic Acid

❌ Salicylic Acid

❌ Mandelic Acid

❌ Vitamin C

❌ Physical Scrubs

Over-exfoliated skin can sometimes look shiny, irritated, tight or breakout-prone 👀

... Read moreFrom personal experience, understanding how to properly incorporate lactic acid into your skincare routine can make a significant difference in skin health and appearance. Lactic acid is a gentle alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) known for its ability to exfoliate dead skin cells, improve texture, and boost hydration. However, combining lactic acid with other potent ingredients can disrupt your skin barrier and cause unwanted sensitivity. For example, I've found that using lactic acid alongside retinoids or retinol can sometimes cause redness and peeling if not spaced properly within the routine. Retinol accelerates cell turnover, and when combined with lactic acid’s exfoliating action, it can over-strip the skin’s natural protective layer. This over-exfoliation can result in a shiny, tight, and irritated complexion prone to breakouts and dryness. Similarly, products like benzoyl peroxide or physical scrubs, when paired with lactic acid, are a recipe for excessive dryness and micro-tears. Benzoyl peroxide is a strong antibacterial agent that can be very drying on its own, so layering it with lactic acid increases the risk of compromising your skin's barrier function. Physical exfoliants, while useful, cause friction and can exacerbate irritation when used in conjunction with an acid like lactic acid. I also learned to avoid mixing lactic acid with other acids such as glycolic and mandelic acid or salicylic acid because it intensifies exfoliation and increases sensitivity. Each of these acids targets skin cells differently, so stacking them can overwhelm the skin. Vitamin C, especially pure L-ascorbic acid, although beneficial for brightening, should not be combined directly with lactic acid. The pH levels differ, potentially causing irritation or reduced effectiveness of these ingredients. A key takeaway from my routine adjustment was to listen to my skin's signals. If I noticed burning, increased breakouts, or persistent redness, I would pause exfoliating acids and focus on hydration and barrier repair with moisturizers rich in ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid. This step-back period allowed my skin to regain strength and glow healthily. In summary, lactic acid can be incredibly beneficial when used thoughtfully. To maximize its benefits and protect your skin barrier, avoid mixing it with harsh actives, opt for gentle application, and prioritize hydration. Have patience, adjust based on your skin’s response, and enjoy the smooth, radiant complexion lactic acid can offer.
