Gardening with Bri: What to plant in April?

So most of the South is out of the frost risk and we can start planting in our gardens again (if you haven’t already started). Here are some things you can start to direct sow, transplant into your garden if you live in Zone 8B.

🌿 Vegetables to Plant in April (Zone 8b):

🔥 Warm-Season Crops (your main focus now)

These LOVE the warming temps:

   •   Tomatoes 🍅

   •   Peppers (bell + hot) 🌶️

   •   Cucumbers 🥒

   •   Squash (zucchini & yellow squash)

   •   Beans (green beans, pole beans)

   •   Corn 🌽

   •   Eggplant 🍆

   •   Okra

👉 Tip:

   •   In Zone 8b, these are best planted as seedlings/transplants, not seeds (except beans, corn, cucumbers, you can direct sow those).

🌱 Still Safe to Direct Sow:

Fast growers that handle April perfectly:

   •   Carrots 🥕

   •   Radishes

   •   Beets

   •   Turnips

   •   Swiss chard

🥬 Leafy Greens (Last Call!):

You can still sneak these in early April:

   •   Lettuce

   •   Spinach

   •   Kale

   •   Arugula

⚠️ But… they’ll start bolting (going to seed) as temps rise, so:

   •   Plant in partial shade

   •   Harvest quickly

🌸 Herbs to Plant Now:

Perfect time to start your herb garden:

   •   Basil 🌿 (thrives in warmth)

   •   Cilantro (plant now before heat kills it)

   •   Parsley

   •   Thyme

   •   Rosemary

   •   Oregano

🌼 Flowers You Can Plant:

For that aesthetic garden (and pollinators 🐝✨):

   •   Marigolds (great for pest control too)

   •   Zinnias

   •   Sunflowers 🌻

   •   Cosmos

Deep South
4/3 Edited to

... Read moreSpring is a fantastic time to refresh your garden and enjoy the many benefits of growing your own vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Based on my own experience gardening in Zone 8B, April offers a golden window to get your garden thriving before the heat of summer sets in. Warm-season crops like tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, and okra really flourish when transplanted this month, as they need that steady warming soil to establish strong root systems. Direct sowing quick-growers such as carrots, radishes, beets, and turnips is also a great strategy — these fast maturing vegetables ensure a harvest within weeks, keeping your motivation high. I’ve learned that timing is crucial with leafy greens like lettuce and kale as they tend to bolt quickly in rising temperatures, so planting them in partial shade and harvesting early really extends their productivity. Herbs such as basil, cilantro, parsley, and rosemary are my personal favorites to grow in April. Basil especially seems to thrive with the onset of consistent warmth, and it's incredibly rewarding to snip fresh leaves for cooking right from the garden. Planting flowers like marigolds and sunflowers not only adds beauty but also attracts pollinators and helps control pests naturally, creating a balanced ecosystem in your garden. One tip I find useful is to prepare your soil well before planting — enriching it with compost makes a huge difference in plant health and yield. Additionally, keep an eye on watering schedules as the weather warms; consistent moisture without waterlogging is key. Growing from seedlings or transplants for warm-season plants often yields better results than direct sowing, except for beans, corn, and cucumbers, which do well sown directly. Overall, April in Zone 8B is the perfect time to blend patience with action, setting up your garden for a bountiful spring and summer. Whether you're starting a backyard patch or using raised beds, taking advantage of this planting window while managing plant needs thoughtfully creates a thriving and joyful garden space.
