... Read moreHey fellow gardening enthusiasts! I've been getting so many questions lately about how to get the most out of your onion harvest, especially for those delicious homegrown varieties. There’s nothing quite like pulling fresh onions from your own garden, and knowing exactly when and how to harvest them can make all the difference for flavor and storage. So, let me share some of my go-to tips and tricks! First up, let's talk about harvesting green onions, also known as scallions. These are super easy and rewarding to grow at home. You can start harvesting them when they're about 6 to 8 inches tall. My favorite method is to simply snip off what I need from the top, leaving about an inch or two of the white base in the soil. This way, they'll regrow, giving you multiple harvests from the same plant! If you want a thicker green onion or need the whole plant for a recipe, you can gently pull it out of the ground. Just make sure the soil is loose enough to avoid damaging the roots of neighboring plants. A fun bonus tip: you can even regrow them from the white ends you buy at the grocery store by placing them in a shallow glass of water! Now, for those beautiful, big bulb onions – think red onions, yellow, or white varieties. Knowing when to harvest these can be a bit trickier, but there's a clear sign to look for: when the tops of the plants start to fall over and turn yellow. This usually happens in mid to late summer, depending on your climate and planting time. Once about two-thirds of the tops have flopped, it’s time to get them out of the ground. I carefully loosen the soil around the bulbs with a small trowel or my hands, then gently pull each onion up. Avoid bruising them, as this can lead to rot during storage. After harvesting your bulb onions, the next crucial step is curing. This process dries the outer layers and sets the skin, which is essential for long-term storage. I lay my harvested onions in a single layer in a warm, dry, and well-ventilated spot – a shed, garage, or even under a porch works great. Leave them for about one to two weeks, or until the necks are dry and the outer skins are papery. Once cured, you can trim the dried tops and roots. Store them in a cool, dry, dark place, like a mesh bag or old pantyhose, away from direct sunlight. They can last for months this way! Finally, for the truly dedicated gardener, collecting onion seeds is a fantastic way to ensure you have a supply for future plantings. Onions are biennials, meaning they usually flower and produce seeds in their second year of growth. If you let some of your onions go to seed, you'll see a tall stalk emerge with a round flower head at the top. Wait until these flower heads dry out completely and turn brown or black, and you can see the tiny black seeds inside. I snip off the entire stalk, bring it indoors, and let it dry further in a paper bag. Once fully dry, you can gently shake or rub the seed heads to release the seeds. Store them in a cool, dry place in an airtight container or a labeled envelope for next season. Happy planting and happy harvesting!
