Lazy girls guide to staying focused longer

This post is for you if…

• You’re reading this while also watching a show

• You can’t do anything without also having a podcast on

• You can’t read without picking up your phone every 5 minutes

• You switch between four apps constantly looking for entertainment

• It takes you twice as long to do everything because you get distracted constantly

Sound like you? It’s because your attention span sucks (I know because mine does too). The issue is, having a short attention span makes it way harder to be productive and live a healthy life. You end up half enjoying and doing everything because you can’t fully focus on what’s in front of you.

To fix this, you have to consciously limit attention-grabbing activities and spend more time doing things that require your full attention. This means:

• Scrolling less

• Multitasking less

• Taking out the podcast while cleaning

• Picking your phone up less

• Fully focusing when watching shows

➡️ Try putting your phone in a designated place when you really want to focus. I’ll place my phone on my bedside table and leave it there until I finish what I wanted to get done. This helps keep it out of sight and out of mind so I’m less tempted to pick it up.

➡️ Or… setting a timer. Timers give you a specific amount of time that you know you need to focus for and really help you to stay focused. Start small with just five minutes and then slowly build from there.

➡️ Practice with reading. Using this timer method while reading can do wonders for your attention span. Start by reading for five minutes, then read for 6, then 7, until you can learn to read without even thinking about picking up your phone or doing something else. This will help to increase your attention span while doing other things as well.

Gradually increase your focus periods; start with just five minutes of dedicated work and extend the time as you adapt. This approach can make tasks seem less daunting and instill a sense of achievement. Lastly, remember the importance of physical environment. Create a workspace free of clutter and distractions. Ensuring your workspace is conducive to concentration will naturally lead to better focus. Embrace these tips, and you'll find that with consistent practice, your attention span will grow stronger over time.
