Why did I go to college and pick the major I’m in?

#letschat #lemon8challenge #lemon8questions

why did I got to college? :

I went to college because I grew up with a tough life. I didn’t really get the best grades in school either, not just because I wasn’t trying or because I had a difficult time learning, or being dyslexic. I was going through a lot, from poverty, having to grow up too fast and not enjoy my childhood, having anxiety and depression. My family told me I wouldn’t make it this far, and I wouldn’t amount to anything. When I was in high school, I got better grades, gained more friends, joined track, cross country, choir, band, the drama club, dance and dance workshop . I was always running around to different rehearsals and practices. When I found out that I could do these things in college too, I chose to look more into it. When applying to colleges I was definitely nervous because I didn’t think I was going to be accepted because the voices of my family would still linger and I would doubt myself. I then got accepted to 10 colleges, even the ones I wanted to get accepted to. I begin college and I started off as a nursing major at first. I took it for 2 years and decided it wasn’t for me.

College also gained me connections with professors in my field, connections with my peers, gained friends, and gained knowledge on life and how I want my future to go.

Why did I put the major I’m in?:

My new major is Social Work, and I absolutely love it. Growing up going through the tough times, I would offer hear the words social worker, and I had a negative outlook on them. When I switched my major it opened my eyes to a whole new world. As a social worker, I believe there’s no such thing as getting bored with your career. You can work with babies, youth, adolescents(teens), young adults, adults and elderly. In the populations of LGBTQ, foster care, education, healthcare, mental health, in the hospital, etc. you can work at a micro, mezzo, and Marco level. There’s so many places and communities you can work in. My goal with whatever career I was set for was to help people. I want to help people in need, and help adolescents who age out of foster care. I also want to start a nonprofit soup kitchen or food truck that helps feed people in need. That’s why I started my business “Bs Tasty Foods”.

I want to make a difference in the world and in my life, that’s why I choose to go to college and chose my major “social work”

... Read moreDeciding to attend college is a significant milestone that shapes your future career and personal development. Many students grapple with choosing their major, often influenced by their life experiences and aspirations. For some, college serves as a pathway to overcome past challenges, like adversity or lack of support. Studies suggest that students who engage in diverse activities, such as clubs or sports, build networks that enhance their college experience. Furthermore, selecting a major like social work can open numerous doors to helping a wide range of communities, from youth to the elderly. Engaging with underrepresented populations, such as those in foster care or LGBTQ+ communities, provides a fulfilling career option that contributes positively to society. Nonprofit initiatives, like soup kitchens or community outreach programs, can also stem from these career choices, creating opportunities to give back. Ultimately, education empowers individuals to fulfill their personal goals while making a difference in the lives of others. If you're considering your path, remember that your journey, like mine, can be profoundly transformative.
