things I am relearning while learning a new horse
learning a new horse is so tricky, especially for me, as it's been years since I've needed to do so.
1. good days, and bad days are 100% normal, especially when riding a new horse. however, I've learned that it's harder to tell when I'm having a bad day or if he's having a bad day or both. I often wonder if I'm imagining that it's a bad day, too.
2. my mood heavily affects him. I've learned that if I'm annoyed or cranky, he will feed off on that and, in turn, feel those big feelings himself. however, I've also learned that he has the ability to move his feelings to me.
3. I often find myself putting way too much pressure on myself and him to be absolutely perfect. there are days when I just don't understand myself. but I need to remind myself that this is my safe place and that it's okay to not be perfect all the time.
4. it's impossible for a 16 year old girl like myself to have every distance spot on with a horse I barely know. I am also learning a completely new horse with a completely different stride and ability. There are bound to be a few dropped poles and a few chips.
5. I am learning him, and he is learning me. it's hard to realize that I don't know his behaviours, and I don't automatically know everything about this horse. it's also hard to realize that he doesn't know my background or my personality either.
learning a new horse is a wonderful experience, but it can also be so challenging and disheartening. I hope individuals can relate to my thoughts and feelings 🩷
