Avoid Short Cuts in Woodworking: The Arrow Trick to Perfect Board Lengths

Everyone measure perfectly, cut on the line, and then realize your board is too short? 😫

Welcome to Furniture Building 101: Episode 4.

Here is the problem: Your saw blade isn't invisible. It has thickness (called "kerf"). Usually, that blade eats up about 1/8” of wood. So if you cut directly ON your pencil line, you are turning that measurement into sawdust.

THE FIX: THE ARROW TRICK 🏹 Instead of drawing a straight line, draw an "arrow" (^) that points to the side of the board you want to KEEP.

1. Mark your measurement.

2. Draw the arrow, with the middle at the measurement you need.

3. Align the blade so the teeth just "kiss" the middle of the arrow. If your waste side is on the right side (like in the video) you want the left side of the blades teeth to kiss the middle of the arrow and vice versa if your waste is on the left.

This guarantees your board stays the exact length you measured, every single time. No more gaps. No more wasted lumber.

Ignoring kerf means you're unknowingly losing part of your board, turning accurate measurements into sawdust. I found the 'Arrow Trick' incredibly helpful: instead of a simple straight line, marking an arrow (^) that points to the side of the board you want to keep helped me visualize and position the cut correctly. By aligning the blade teeth to kiss the center of the arrow’s point on the waste side, I ensured the cut was precise, and the board stayed true to my intended measurement. This technique improved my furniture building immensely by reducing wood waste and eliminating gaps in joints caused by undersized pieces. Besides saving materials and money, it enhances the overall quality and appearance of my projects, making each cut count. For anyone starting in woodworking or DIY furniture building, accounting for saw blade kerf is essential. A simple marking adjustment like the arrow can save hours of frustration and resources.
