Why Your Dishwasher Smells 🤢

Most people don’t even know their dishwasher filter needs to be cleaned at least monthly 😭 and THIS is exactly why so many dishwashers start smelling funky. The buildup gets REAL nasty. Don’t forget to clean the cover part too and remove all that sitting water underneath because that’s where a lot of the smell comes from 🤢🫠 I finally found an easy way to clean mine + keep my dishwasher smelling fresh for weeks. All my real cleaning hacks, routines, and product secrets will be in my upcoming ebook 👀 stay tuned! ... Read moreKeeping your dishwasher fresh and odor-free requires more than just occasional rinsing. From my experience, the main culprit for those unpleasant smells is the buildup of food particles and standing water trapped in the dishwasher filter and underneath its cover. This damp, hidden area creates a breeding ground for mold and bacteria, which cause the nasty odors. I recommend establishing a monthly routine to clean the dishwasher filter thoroughly. Removing the filter is usually straightforward—check your model’s manual for specifics—and you can rinse it under warm water, scrubbing with a soft brush if needed to remove stubborn grime. Don’t forget to also clean the cover part and the base where water tends to pool. I often soak these components in vinegar or a mild bleach solution to disinfect them. Aside from cleaning the filter, running a maintenance cycle with dishwasher cleaner or a cup of white vinegar can help break down grease and residue inside the appliance. For an extra fresh scent, placing a dishwasher-safe deodorizing tablet or a lemon wedge inside keeps the smell pleasant. Over time, grime can build up on the spray arms and door seals, so wiping these with a damp cloth and mild detergent helps maintain overall hygiene. Another tip is to avoid leaving dirty dishes inside the dishwasher for long periods, as food debris can begin to rot and contribute to odor. Implementing these simple yet effective steps has transformed how my dishwasher smells and performs. I now enjoy fresh-smelling dishes and no longer tolerate that funky smell after a cycle. Staying consistent with the filter cleaning and overall dishwasher maintenance truly makes a difference, and I highly recommend it to anyone dealing with similar issues.
