Garden Soil Prep

With my garden space sorted, I need to build up the soil to prepare the area for spring planting. I’m a bit outside delivery range for bulk soil, so it’ll take a few more trips filling my Mazda with bagged soil conditioner and compost before this space is filled. Fortunately, I have a pretty significant head start and can take my time gathering everything I need before I begin planting for the upcoming growing season.

... Read moreGetting your garden beds ready for spring planting can be one of the most exciting, yet challenging, parts of the gardening season. Especially when you’re like me and fall outside the bulk soil delivery zone! I totally get the struggle of loading up your car with bag after bag of soil. It’s a workout, but knowing you’re building a thriving foundation for your plants makes it all worth it. This year, my focus has been on using quality amendments to create the perfect environment in my raised beds. After some research and talking to local gardeners, I decided to go with PNW's OWN Organics Soil & Mulch Lawn & Garden SOIL CONDITIONER, combined with some good old Planting Compost. I’ve heard amazing things about how these products help transform tired soil into a nutrient-rich, well-draining haven. Why Choose PNW's OWN Organics for Your Raised Beds? For raised beds, you can’t just dump any soil in there and expect the best results. Drainage is key, and so is a good balance of nutrients. That's where a high-quality soil conditioner like PNW's OWN Organics comes in. It’s designed to improve soil structure, which means better aeration for roots and efficient water retention without getting waterlogged. Adding compost, especially a dedicated Planting Compost, boosts the organic matter significantly, introducing beneficial microbes and a slow release of nutrients that your plants will love throughout the season. Together, they create a light, fluffy, and fertile mix that's ideal for everything from delicate seedlings to hungry vegetable plants. My Step-by-Step for Building Rich Raised Bed Soil: Layering for Success: Before adding the bagged soil, I always ensure my raised beds have a good base. Sometimes I'll add a layer of cardboard to suppress weeds and then some branches or other organic matter for drainage and to help fill the bed without needing quite as much bagged soil. This also encourages a healthy soil ecosystem from the bottom up. Mixing the Magic: Once the base is set, I start adding the PNW's OWN Organics Soil & Mulch Lawn & Garden SOIL CONDITIONER. I aim for at least 6-8 inches of this rich conditioner. Then, I generously layer in the Planting Compost. My goal is usually a 2:1 ratio of conditioner to compost, but I don't get too hung up on exact measurements. I focus more on ensuring a good, even mix. I actually load multiple bags of “PNW's OWN Organics Soil & Mulch Lawn & Garden SOIL CONDITIONER” onto my yellow utility cart and wheel them over to the beds, then use a shovel to blend it all in right in the bed. This saves a lot of backache compared to mixing in a wheelbarrow! Watering and Settling: After getting the layers in, I give everything a good soak. This helps settle the soil and ensures there are no large air pockets. It also kickstarts the decomposition process in the compost and allows the soil particles to integrate properly. I usually let it sit for a few days, or even a week if I have time, before planting. This gives me a chance to top it up if it settles too much. Tips for Keeping Your Raised Bed Soil Happy: Mulch, Mulch, Mulch: Once your plants are in, a layer of mulch (like wood chips or straw) can work wonders. It helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppresses weeds, meaning less work for you. Feed Your Soil, Not Just Your Plants: Throughout the growing season, consider top-dressing with more compost or a balanced organic fertilizer. Raised beds can deplete nutrients faster than in-ground gardens, so regular feeding is important. Crop Rotation: Even in a small raised bed, rotating your crops each year can help prevent nutrient imbalances and reduce disease pressure. While it takes a bit of effort to haul those bags, seeing the rich, dark soil ready for spring planting is incredibly rewarding. Using quality products like PNW's OWN Organics Soil & Mulch Lawn & Garden SOIL CONDITIONER and Planting Compost really sets your garden up for success, and I can't wait to see what this season brings!
