Why did Jesus teach in parables?

There are many reasons for Jesus to have taught in parables. It was easily memorable for a time where speech was a universal method of passing along information. It revealed layers of deeper truth, as opposed to flat facts. But Jesus himself actually tells his disciple (and us) in Scripture specifically why he was doing this: 10 The disciples came to him and asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?”

11 He replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them. 12 Whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 13 This is why I speak to them in parables:

“Though seeing, they do not see;

though hearing, they do not hear or understand.

14 In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:

“ ‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;

you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.

15 For this people’s heart has become calloused;

they hardly hear with their ears,

and they have closed their eyes.

Otherwise they might see with their eyes,

hear with their ears,

understand with their hearts

and turn, and I would heal them.’ (Matthew 13:10–15) #parables #teachingsofjesus #jesusteachings #biblestudy #dailydevotional

3/11 Edited to

... Read moreTeaching in parables was a distinctive method Jesus used which still resonates today. From personal reflection, I found that parables serve a dual purpose: they both reveal and conceal truths. This means they are simple stories on the surface but carry profound lessons for those willing to ponder deeply. For example, the parables often illustrate aspects of the kingdom of heaven, making complex spiritual ideas relatable by connecting them to everyday life experiences. In modern times, when communication channels have evolved far beyond oral storytelling, the parables still teach us valuable principles—like how understanding requires an open heart and mind. As Matthew 13:10-15 explains, some people hear but don’t truly perceive or understand because their hearts may be hardened. Parables challenge listeners to look beyond the obvious. From a teaching perspective, parables act as a memorable tool. Before written texts were common, people relied on stories that were easy to recall and retell, ensuring the teachings could spread widely and endure over time. Also, because parables often have layers of meaning, they encourage repeated contemplation and study, making them very effective in spiritual development and learning. Personally, engaging with Jesus’ parables offers a way to explore biblical truths more interactively. They invite questions, interpretations, and deeper personal insights. Whether in group Bible study or personal devotion, reflecting on parables helps connect ancient wisdom with contemporary challenges, promoting growth and healing as suggested in the passage.
