WHO’S YOUR STARTER POKÉMON?

Okay, fellow trainers, let's talk about the absolute classic dilemma: choosing your very first Pokémon in the Kanto region. For me, it was always a big deal – Charmander, Squirtle, or Bulbasaur? Everyone has their favorite, but after countless playthroughs, I've really dug into which one gives you the smoothest ride, especially in those crucial early battles. Now, I know a lot of people might think, 'No one chose THIS starter' when it came to Bulbasaur, but let me tell you, it's often the unsung hero! You see, when you're just starting your journey, those first couple of Gym Leaders can be a real challenge. Think about it: your very first hurdle is Brock, the Rock-type Gym Leader. If you pick Bulbasaur, with its Grass/Poison typing, you're practically 'smashing rock' from the get-go! His Geodude and Onix don't stand a chance against Vine Whip. It's a breeze! And it doesn't stop there. Next up is Misty, the Water-type specialist. Again, Bulbasaur is going to absolutely destroy Misty's Staryu and Starmie. It’s like having an unfair advantage right out of the gate. This makes the early game so much less stressful and allows you to build up your team without too much grinding. Then there's Charmander. Oh, Charmander, my fiery friend! As cool as it is (and who doesn't love a dragon-to-be?), picking Charmander means you 'gotta go against Brock first, and that's a lil rough.' Rock-type moves are super effective against Fire, and your initial attacks won't do much. You'll likely need to catch a Mankey or Nidoran early on to stand a chance. And then? 'Misty! For Charmander as well!' Another tough match-up. Water beats Fire, so you're struggling through two of the first three gyms. It's definitely a more challenging start, requiring more strategic team building right away. And what about Squirtle? Our adorable little turtle Pokémon. If you pick Squirtle, you're 'gonna crush ummm Brock!' Water-type moves are super effective against Rock, so that first badge is pretty easy. But then, just like with Charmander, you face Misty. 'Misty is kinda stale' for Squirtle because Water-type moves are not very effective against other Water-types. While you won't be at a type disadvantage, you won't have the clear advantage Bulbasaur does. It's a neutral match, but less impactful than Bulbasaur's performance. The OCR text also wisely points out, 'By the time you get to the third UHHH GYM LEADER? You got a plethora of Pokémon you can train up at this point!' This is so true. While your initial choice matters for those early battles, by the time you reach Lt. Surge, Sabrina, or Erika, you've had plenty of opportunities to catch a diverse range of Pokémon. You can build a well-rounded team that covers all your bases. So, while Bulbasaur provides an undeniable early game advantage, ultimately, any of the three can lead you to victory. It really comes down to your preferred playstyle and how much of a challenge you want in the beginning. For me, the ease of Bulbasaur in those first few gyms just can't be beaten. It sets you up for success and lets you enjoy the adventure without too many early headaches. So, if you're looking for an easier start, Bulbasaur is often the top pick in my book!
