Different types of autistic stimming

I didn’t realize my car dancing was a form of stimming until recently. And honestly, it makes sense… I was a bit of a raver and festival junkie for the better part of my 20s. Any place I could find to dance, I would.

As I’ve gotten older and realized what is (and isn’t) stimming behavior, I notice a lot more of my stims come from a place of being happy or excited. Dancing is the biggest, but also, bouncing on my toes and clapping my hands are front and center, too. If I’m anxious or bored, I might pick at my skin, jump, flap or crack my knuckles.

Do you notice different stims go with your different moods? Did you have any preconceived notions of what typical autistic stimming looks like?

... Read moreStimming, or self-stimulatory behavior, varies widely among individuals with autism and can often surprise those familiar with more common stereotypes like hand-flapping or rocking. For many, movements can encompass a range of activities, including dancing, pacing, or even skin-picking, each tied to different emotional states such as happiness, anxiety, or boredom. Those who identify as neurodivergent often experience stimming not just as a method of self-soothing but as a celebration of joy, excitement, or even expression at social events. As the understanding of autism evolves, it cements the idea that stimming behaviors are more than mere habits; they can be integral to one’s identity and comfort. Discussions around stimming are not only enlightening but critical in dispelling myths associated with autistic behaviors. Engaging with communities via social media or support groups aids in fostering a more supportive environment, allowing autistic individuals to share their unique journeys and experiences. By broadening our awareness around the various types of autistic stimming, we can encourage acceptance and understanding. Have you experienced or observed stimming behaviors, and how do they resonate with emotional states in yourself or others? Your reflections can contribute greatly to the ongoing dialogue about the richness of autistic experiences.

Stimming isn’t “bad behavior.” It’s communication.
For many neurodivergent people, stimming is a natural way the brain regulates itself. It can help release energy, manage emotions, process sensory input, and maintain focus. But too often, stimming gets misunderstood. A child tapping their foot, rocking, repeating words, or fidgeting isn’t ne
