How ADHD affects my diet: Goals v reality

When it comes to food, who else has really good intentions? I know what I should be eating, I know what's healthy for my body and what's not... But getting there can be hard. ADHD makes it even harder. Good intentions don't always equal good decisions for me.

I often set goals for myself, but depending on what else is going on in my life at the time, sometimes they are not reasonable... and I don't end up meeting them. There are days I am exhausted, I've run out of executive function entirely, and on those days, sometimes you just have to give yourself grace.

How do you accommodate yourself and your diet with ADHD?

... Read moreOkay, let's get real about ADHD and eating. That feeling of looking at the clock and realizing it's 3 PM, and you haven't eaten anything since maybe a coffee? Yeah, I know that struggle all too well. It’s like my brain just completely blanks on the whole 'nourishment' thing until my stomach starts rumbling like a distant thunderstorm, or worse, I get so hangry I can barely function. It's not about lacking good intentions – I want to eat well, especially for a healthy breakfast with protein+fat+carbs, maybe some small frequent snacks, and definitely listening to my body. But then reality hits. One day, I was so hyperfocused on a project, I literally forgot to eat breakfast, then lunch, and by dinner, I was so depleted that cooking felt like climbing Everest. That's when the "forgot to eat" meme becomes less funny and more of a daily struggle. It often leads to grabbing whatever is fastest – hello, protein bar as a full meal! Or even worse, getting to midnight and suddenly realizing, "Oh, right, food!" So, how do we hack this? For me, it's been a lot of trial and error. One game-changer has been setting alarms. Seriously, silly as it sounds, a consistent reminder on my phone for breakfast, lunch, and dinner has made a huge difference. Sometimes I just need that external cue to break out of hyperfocus or time blindness. Another thing I've learned is to have "ADHD-friendly" food prep. This means having things ready to go that require minimal effort. For instance, hard-boiled eggs in the fridge for a quick protein boost, pre-chopped veggies, or even just some nuts and fruit easily accessible. If I have to cook a complex meal when I'm already low on executive function, it's just not happening. I often find myself not hungry enough for meals if I wait too long, and then I just graze on whatever is around, which isn't always the most nutritious. And let's talk about protein. It's so crucial for sustained energy and focus, but it's often the first thing I forgot to prioritize when I'm just trying to get something in my stomach. I've started keeping things like Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or even those individual tuna pouches handy. They're quick, easy, and pack a good protein punch without much fuss. It's about making the healthy choice the easiest choice. What about those missed hunger cues? This is a big one for me. My body doesn’t always send clear signals until it’s an emergency. I've found that eating smaller, more frequent meals or snacks, even if I don't feel ravenous, helps regulate my blood sugar and energy levels, preventing that crash-and-burn feeling. It also means I'm less likely to overeat later when I finally remember I'm hungry. Ultimately, it’s about giving myself grace, as the original article mentioned. There will be days when the dinosaur chicken nuggets and spring rolls are the reality, and that's okay. But by implementing these small, ADHD-friendly strategies – like alarms, easy-access protein, and simplified meal prep – I'm slowly bridging the gap between my dietary goals and the reality of living with ADHD. What are your go-to hacks for staying fed and fueled?
