Finishing up Week 2 of my home organization challenge, specifically tackling the linen closet, felt like a huge win! If you're like me, you might be putting off that big closet cleanout, but I promise it's so rewarding. Let me share some more tips on how I approach decluttering and organizing any closet, whether it's your wardrobe or a linen closet like mine. First, the 'Gather 5 Bins' method from our challenge sheet is a game-changer. Seriously, grab five boxes or laundry baskets and label them: Keep, Donate, Sell, Trash, and Relocate. This simple step prevents decision fatigue. When you 'Empty all shelves,' don't just dump everything. Pull items out one by one, make a quick decision for each, and place it in the appropriate bin. It's amazing how much clearer your mind becomes when you're not trying to sort everything in place. Once everything is out, take a moment to 'wipe down' all the shelves, drawers, and even the baseboards. It's a fresh start, and it feels so good! This step is often overlooked but truly makes a difference in creating a clean, inviting space. Now for the fun part: 'organize everything in the "keep" bin into categories.' For a linen closet, this means separating sheets by bed size, towels by type, and storing 'Extra Pillows/Pillowcases' together. For a clothes closet or wardrobe, categorize by item type (tops, bottoms, dresses), season, or even color if that brings you joy. This is where you can apply principles often associated with efficient organization – like vertical folding to maximize space and easily see all items. Instead of stacking, fold items thinly and stand them upright. This works wonders for linens, t-shirts, and even jeans. Consider using clear bins or drawer dividers within your organized categories. This helps define spaces and prevents things from becoming a jumbled mess again. For example, in my linen closet, I use clear containers for smaller items like washcloths or extra toiletries. In a wardrobe, these could be for socks, underwear, or accessories. Finally, the most crucial step for lasting 'home organization' is maintenance. Take five minutes each week to put things back in their designated spots. When you bring new items in, consider if something old needs to go out to maintain balance. This continuous, small effort prevents the need for another massive 'closet cleanout' soon. It's a challenge, but totally worth it for a peaceful, functional home!
