Why I decided to become a teacher in my 30s
I have always loved math and science growing up. Originally, I had started as an engineering major in college (switched to recreation management as a junior, but that’s a story for another time)
When I graduated I tried to work with my degree in recreation, but those jobs weren’t paying enough for my student loans and I sold my soul to corporate America instead. After a few office jobs, I decided that I was not made to work in an office and I hated everything about it.
I dipped my toes into working with children as a residential counselor at a group home, but it could get dangerous and was not the best. Then I worked for a rehab facility, which was fun, but not the best managed.
Finally I got a job working as a paraprofessional at the elementary school I had attended. The pay was awful, but it just felt right. My ultimate goal was high school math, but even working with the little felt like home to my heart. I transitioned to working at the middle school at the end of my first year and loved that more. I didn’t have to keep my “Disney” face on at all times. My big goal was still the high school though.
Then I got an email asking if I would be interested in interviewing for an open math position. I was elated! And I got it! It’s felt scary at times having no formal training, but I have a great team with me to lean on and ask questions. This is where I want to work until retirement!

Finances are a big concern when switching careers, especially when you're used to a corporate salary. Be prepared for a potential pay cut initially, but remember the long-term benefits of a pension and often good health insurance. I definitely had to adjust my budget, but the peace of mind knowing I wasn't dreading Mondays anymore was priceless. Start saving early if you can, and look into tuition reimbursement programs or scholarships for career changers in education. One of the biggest challenges I faced was simply adjusting to a completely different work environment. Moving from an office to a classroom, especially with middle schoolers, was a shock! It’s a lot more dynamic, often chaotic, but incredibly rewarding. Don't be afraid to lean on your colleagues. My team has been amazing, and having mentors who've been in the trenches for years is invaluable. They're your lifeline, especially when you feel like you're navigating uncharted waters. And for anyone wondering if their 'non-traditional' background is a hindrance, absolutely not! My varied experiences before teaching, even the corporate ones, taught me resilience, problem-solving, and how to manage different personalities – all crucial skills in the classroom. Your unique perspective and life experience, like mine (yes, even my teal hair and nose piercing get a few curious glances, but it helps kids relate!), can actually be your superpower. You bring something fresh and authentic to the students that a traditional path might not always offer. Finally, don't let age be a barrier. Your 30s, 40s, or even 50s can be the perfect time to pivot. You have maturity, life experience, and often a clearer sense of what truly fulfills you. If you feel that pull towards education, explore it. Volunteer, substitute teach, or even just observe a few classrooms. It might just be the best decision you ever make, leading you from dreading your alarm to genuinely loving what you do every single day.
